Here is a match that has some interesting scenarios to discuss:
Nirvana has the unfair advantage of being “frozen in time” so they never really had a chance to have a down part of their career – like Pearl Jam has. But to their credit, Pearl Jam has continued and is still somewhat viable.
While they both might have come from Seattle, these two bands have different sounds – and so to pick a winner based on only one criteria is tough. While I think Nirvana had more bang, Pearl Jam has had the endurance and longer body of work. So, I’m gonna go with Pearl Jam on this one.
What say you?
I think Nirvana is the overall better band, they have more records sales, a bigger fanbase and they just sound better…Pearl Jam annoys me
Thats a good pic for Nirvana lol.
Not that either is a blatant example of musical genius, but I think I am gonna side with Nirvana here. They just achieved much more in a shorter amount of time (long before Kobain’s demise).
BTW….I don’t know how I feel about the pic, admin.
Since that was the way Cobain decided to leave this world, that’s why I used it. I have no ounce of pity for anyone who has practically anything they could want, an opportunity to help others in a positive way and then go have a pity party on themselves since they feel bad about something and blow their brains out.
Admin
I have reached a point to where I can’t stand Nirvana. Not since acdc has there been a band shoved down our throats more. I mean Kurt Cobain is like The tupac of grunge, he won’t stay dead.
@admin
Meh, I guess you’re right. Just felt wrong somehow, mainly for any possible hard-core fan here.
Another great example of “he had it comming”.
@Admin
I really find that offensive. I have suffered from clinical depression in the past (this is considered likely to be the reason Cobain committed suicide) and you have no clue what it’s like until you’ve felt it. I could have had billions and great friends and family and none of it would have made me feel any better. It’s like nothing is worth living for, nothing matters, but everything is terrible, and I can’t say I didn’t think of ending it. Nothing was wrong with my life, but I hated it, so please show a little respect for a man who was clearly mentally troubled.
@Thepocalypse – I’ve had moments when I was younger where I thought life wasn’t worth living. But I fought my way through it. It might not have been labled “clinical”, as I chose to deal with it by myself. Everyone has issues, and rock stars seem to have the most. It’s all part of what makes them famous I guess.
But to come back to your statement of being offended, everyone has their views on the world and in this case, we’ll just have to agree to dis-agree – right?
57% of all male suicides in the continental US are committed with firearms, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Which means that each year, just over 10,000 Men decide they had enough from life and redecorate their walls with Grey matter.
I agree with the admin on this matter, we should not hold a singer (Or any celebrity) at a specially reserved pantheon for depression or suicide, neither should we censor ourselves against two totally unrelated images that have only one single *barely* coherent element. A firearm used as a prop in a photo shoot unrelated to any act of self-harm or even depression.
On a final unrelated note, I believe Kurt took his life with a double-barrel Shotgun, the Carbine in the image would have had a vastly different effect on the aftermath of pulling the trigger (More in-and-out than *BOOM* Splat). I hate to to evoke imagery of suicide, but think of a blossoming flower that was once Kurt Cobain’s head.
I really can’t say this pic bothers me and be honest. The only person to blame for Kurt’s death is himself. Though it’s not a good thing in anyway, it is something to learn from. All I’m trying to say is that I find this pic extremely appropriate. Kurt was one of those types of people that found the creepy and plain weird just funny by what I here, so is not befitting for their pic?
@Theapcoalypse
I have thought over the last several months of drinking everything under the sink…but whatever, I like Nirvana better
Im thinking right now….Dan sucks…
clinical depression? grow the hell up depression is just another way people have invented to get out of the responsabilites that they will have to face in life, that guy thought he was taking the easy way out ending it instead of maning up . i myself tested positive for depression i have never taken a drug in my life and i dont plan to yet i love my life and i still laugh at hot shots. so dont use that line as an excuse “im to depressed to go to work, or pull my weight in society.
“I have suffered from clinical depression in the past ” in the past ,i take that to mean your not a pansy ,and you didnt let it get to you, congratz
“clinical depression? grow the hell up depression is just another way people have invented to get out of the responsabilites that they will have to face in life”
Major depressive disorder (Otherwise known as Clinical depression) is far from being just a minor self-degenerating (And recurring) psychotropic effect, it’s most likely an evolutionary side effect of a decline in serotonin levels in synaptic density. This is quite possibly a biological response by the raphe nuclei in lieu of a rising global population. Personally I find the Monoamine theory the most plausible, as a decline in noticeable trends of natural selection amongst peer groups over the past 100,000 years would most likely result in the continuous proliferation and erratic behavior of the 5-HTT gene.
Either way, depression has far more severe biological repercussions beyond people simply deciding not to work (Traits of laziness and depression are not clinically associated – Nor comparable) or pull their weight; and whilst I agree that individuals have taken advantage of symptoms to further proliferate their own nefarious agendas, suggesting that severe clinical depression is something to “Man up about” leads me to state that *you* are the one that requires much needed growing up.
In lieu of this you should be telling Diabetes patients to man up and produce insulin.
I suggest you read these comparatively simple journals before making such inane judgment calls.

You know Space Marine, I’m kinda getting sick of you just flaming me at every chance possible, so you know what, F#ck you…it’s really gotten old, and I hardly speak of Dan anymore…you are just trying to re-light a fire that has been burned out long ago
“clinical depression? grow the hell up depression is just another way people have invented to get out of the responsabilites that they will have to face in life,”
Actually, to all of you, it’s due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. That’s why people can become depressed in a perfect situation. Normal emotional responses fail to occur due to improper distribution of the hormones that cause said emotions. As I said before, you can all sit there on your high horse and say, “Well it’s just an excuse.” But to anyone who’s been through it, you look like complete idiots.
“I’ve had moments when I was younger where I thought life wasn’t worth living.”
You were clearly emotionally rather than clinically depressed. They are two very different things. Your depression is a reaction to the state of your life, mine started with no warning and no real cause and persisted until I took some medication to rectify it.
“i have never taken a drug in my life and i dont plan to”
I’d still be in that state now if I hadn’t. I sincerely doubt you “tested positive” for it, Kano, you appear to be pulling something similar to what happens when someone tells a “your mom” joke and the butt of the joke instantly insists their mother is dead, however unlikely.
@Baron
Take it easy, mate. Its just a barb thrown your way exactly for that same reaction.
I know its starting to sound like my patented line, but just grow a thicker skin and you’ll be fine.
@epoc
Similar statement. Don’t let such ignorance get to you on such a personal level.
If it helps you feel any better, I am 29 years old, happily married, have a solid job (you “kindly” showed your support to that another post, heh), just bought my first home, have several hobbies that include a number of “outside activities” which are quite enjoyable, and I have both a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist who diagnose me with Dysthymic Disorder (a type of depression). Sure, I am appropriately medicated and as you can probably tell from my contributions to the site that I am currently doing well despite my issues. Yet, such ignorant posts like the ones above do not get to me.
They shouldn’t get to you either.
Most of those are simple opinions and views on the actions of one individual. One celebrity. I actually agree with them. Knowing what I know of depression, I can say that he absolutely had a choice. He was a man that could have it all, but he still didn’t seek the help he needed.
You should just be aware that people who display this sort of animosity to the disease simply cannot understand its nature because it has not been in their lives. Chalk it up to their ignorance, and move it along.
@kano
Please read post #13 carefully and follow the provided links. It would probably help to be well informed beforehand, and actually reduce the chances of you coming across as complete imbecile on this site, before expressing such ignorant opinions on a condition that ails millions in varying degrees.
@ Baron
The reason I said that is because you said this.
“the Q are just gay…seriously”
You Just can’t take your own medicine obviously. I like the Q yet you call them gay.
It’s not that it’s just it seems like you do it constantly..I only said that once, and I really hate the Q…it wasn’t directed towards you at all
“and I really hate the Q”
You know deep down in the depths of your maniacle puppy killing heart that you love them…
Yeah I saw your myspace…..
He likes dead things. Its a known fact.
Damn you all!!! Maybe so but what are your hobbies? Video games…that will really get you somewhere in life…which I cannot talk because I play them frequently
But…well…I guess I do like dead things…including Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain
“Jim Morrison” You may bow.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?
Not being mean but Curt Cobain could influence common day emo childs who complain about life to people who dont care. those kinds of peopel can stop being emo and kill themselves. You can understand Pearl Jam a bit better. It is harder than u think to say any of those 2 voices
jeeeees chill its about whos a better band pearl jam or nirvana not a blog on depression. I’ll stick to the topic i think pearl jam is a much better band due to they have more than 3 or 4 good songs.
@Alex
The off topic discussion is usually more interesting since it often sparks a heated debate.
what the hell?????????? i would like to say sorry on behalf of my idiot brother who put up these posts in my name i did not do that and i also have no history of depression and neither does he sorry and plaese ignore some of my more ridiculous posts
@Theapcoalypse

Nirvana, Hands down.
Seriously, pearl Jam has a better chance against Trapt…who’d probably win anyways..
