There’s a different spin to today’s vs. battle. Rather than look at completely different beings and characters that come from totally different backgrounds, let’s look at a pair that share a very contrary brotherly love/hate relationship.
Spoiler alert: if you haven’t seen Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ yet, you might want to reconsider getting involved in this discussion (or not), or here, distract yourself with some games.
But, if we’re here to discuss the Dragon Balls and the potential they serve, then why aren’t we looking at Goku vs Frieza? That would make more sense, traditionally speaking, given the already assigned antagonist versus protagonist roles of both. What makes the movie release exciting is that we’re expecting to see the real battle unfold now that Frieza’s been unleashed from more than a decade’s worth spent in hell. He’s coming back with an army full of vengeance. Best we leave this battle for the big screen though as there’s not much point predicting what’s already being laid out before us. As we know, with new stories, it opens up the discussions on any new powers, or possibly, the realization that something powerful before just got nerfed.
A more interesting, yet still traditional, combination from the same series is Goku vs Vegeta. There’s a well known tension between these two. We see them standing side by side in unison with a shared goal: to protect planet earth. Both are expected to put their rivalry with each other aside, but what if they didn’t?
What if we fueled Vegeta’s jealousy for Goku’s power and put power (Goku) vs. immortality (Vegeta) in play mode while Frieza wreaks havoc?
Sometimes the most ordinary situations are the most difficult to solve.
Who would win in each scenario?
Vegeta
Well, considering this is DBZ, Goku will immediately 1-Up anything Vegeta does. Anything.

That said, Vegeta is definitely willing to fight a less clean fight. I don’t recall Goku ever hitting someone while they’re down for example.
Mr Popo
Currently Goku is stronger than Vegeta. Vegeta was afaraid to take on prime Golden Frieza, while Goku actually hold his own and eventually won. Vegeta is a better fighter (IMO), but Goku is just stronger.

Pretty much the never-ending question, skill vs strength?
I thought they were even, difference being Vegeta over thinks his decisions while Goku is just a natural

Not exactly. Vegeta have only slightly better fighting skills, however he have massivly better observation skills which allows him to evade sudden attacks and find enemies weak points. However usually his pride always get in the way of his observation skills.
Power wise toriyama stated in an interview after rf that goku and vegeta were even in power, don’t remember exactly which one but I’m sure someone could find the quote better than me.
