Ghost (Halo) Vs Speeder Bike (Star Wars)

Halo Ghost Vs Star Wars Speeder Bike

For this match, forget about the pilot, as we know having Luke Skywalker on the Speeder Bike versus a Brute on a Ghost wouldn’t be a fight that lasts very long.

Instead, what vehicle has better weapons and maneuverability? And if you had to pick one, which would you want?

The Ghost just looks retarded and not fast at al…I’ll go with the Speeder

  2. hotshot December 6, 2008 at 6:59 am -      #2

My vot is for the ghost, the driver of the ghost has more protection than the driver of the speeder,so the ghost wins

The speeder is faster, more agile and has better weapons so easily beats a Ghost

    Id like a ghost
The speeder is faster Less protection better guns
    but id like a ghost

Once again we are all here to witness the superiority of Star Wars craft against that of their Halo counterparts, so let us begin.

    1) The maximum speed of the Ghost during combat is limited to 60Km/h, which can be maximized to 90km/h given a speed boost feature that increases its top speed but compromises the manoeuvrability of the craft. The Speeder Bike can achieve a staggering 500km/h and yet still remain nimble in combat, capable of producing rapid 180 degree turns and alterations in velocity and direction without losing inertia.

    2) Due to the nature of Star Wars ordinance and defensive measures, both the pilot and the craft of the Speeder Bike can remain practically impervious to the duel Plasma turrets of the Ghost craft without succumbing to fatal or even crippling injuries; this is of course assuming that the Ghost could even strike at the Speeder Bike. The shielding of the Ghost meanwhile would remain extremely vulnerable to Blaster fire, which would quite easily tear through the forward engine bays and cockpit of the Ghost craft with little resistance.

    3) The Ghost can only remain elevated at a maximum of one metre from the ground, whilst the Speeder can continually remain elevated at a height of 25 metres, even sustaining a atmospheric flight capacity of over a 100 metres for only a short period of time. Placing it well out of the range of a Ghost.

Couple this with the Speeders ability to house a second gunner, transport potent munitions and heavy ordinance and carry an A.I. construct within the systems onboard computer and once again the Star Wars Speeder is a superior combat platform in every possible extent.

“What I said, just more eloquently put!”

Telling a person a car is fast is one thing, but telling them how fast it is exactly and how is another playing field all together. God is in the details.

  9. spoa December 7, 2008 at 4:24 pm -      #9

speeder is faster by far with better guns but has vary littile defence and can esily be thrown off corse (Episode 3 order 66 0r 616 whatever the order was proves this) so in the end even though the speeder is faster a shot or 2 would send it into a tree so it depends on the inverment!!!!!!!

  10. L-W December 7, 2008 at 7:14 pm -      #10

We know that the Speeder itself would remain safe from Plasma fire; and depending on the armour of the pilot (Most likely Trooper) they would equally remain impervious even when struck with direct shots of plasma. Even if the Speeder flew at vastly reduced speeds, it still has enough of an advantage to keep out of range without risking any high speed (400Km/h +) collision.

I never got this: Why do the covenant love to make their stuff pink and purple?

I don’t think Its ever explained in the books, but I think its just an artistic thing done to contrast the hard, industrial, olive drab look of human stuff with the smooth, clean, organic look of Covie vehicles and equipment.

speeder bike all the way, but that was only laser blast not plasma, the speeder in episode three was BARC speeder. this one i do beleive is in episode six. admin what kind of speeder bik. BARC or episode six bike?

@WTFMACHINE – for this match, the episode six bike.

Erm, about the tree comment, I don’t think the ghost is small enough nor agile enough to fight a battle in a forest!

@ L-W I agree, God is in the details, I just couldn’t be bothered to type them all out =]

  18. The_Master December 22, 2008 at 11:52 pm -      #18

The speeder has speeder over the ghost, but the ghost has more armour and better guns. Ghost could shoot the guy off the speeder no problem.

  19. AlphaCommando December 23, 2008 at 12:17 am -      #19

Actually the speeder exceeds the ghost in firepower, accuracy, speed and in some ways protection (stemming from the speed).

Just read L-W’s main post for reasons why the speeder would win hands down…

  20. BlueOneTrunk February 18, 2009 at 9:01 am -      #20

I go with the ghost in terms of drivability. I have always been able to pilot a ghost since playing Halo 1/2/3.
A speeder however when i played Star Wars Battlefront 2 i got majorly owned because i always crashed the dang speeder into trees. However to a compitent driver the speeder is superior

  21. A Man with Clothes On March 24, 2009 at 8:42 pm -      #21

Well, that depends on the situation.

If you’re looking for speed, go for the speeder.

If you’re looking for weapons and maneuverablity, go for the ghost.

  22. L-W March 24, 2009 at 9:28 pm -      #22

“If you’re looking for weapons and maneuverablity, go for the ghost.”

Even though we’ve just proven that both facets (Superior weaponry and maneuverability) fall in favour with the Speeder? Try reading a thread before you start randomly and indiscriminately posting.

  23. A Man with Clothes On March 25, 2009 at 4:19 pm -      #23

I guess you’re almost right. I meant that the speeder from Star Wars Battlefront 1 had horrible maneuverablity and weapons along with immense speed.

  27. Belisaurius June 1, 2009 at 2:55 am -      #27

I’d take a ghost over a speeder any day.

Mostly this is due to the fact that ghosts are generally more stable than speederbikes and I don’t like becoming a burn mark on a vertical surphase

I also whould like to note tha speederbikes lack a degree of lateral movement, then can’t “sidestep”.

The Ghost is also more durable than a speeder, capable of taking a couple magazines from an assault rifle. Meanwhile, the average speederbike losses control after maybe two hits.

Granted, speederbikes are way faster than ghosts, but any speed above 150 km/h is a bit more than human reaction times can handle properly.

In a competition of who does a better job, the speederbike wins out.

But dammit, I want to live so I’d say the ghost is a better choice.

  28. Captain Epic July 8, 2009 at 10:03 pm -      #28

I prefer ghost. But Star Wars> Halo Tecnology. But I think a Ghost looks cooler. its not very durable though. But in Battle Front 2 I always failed with a SpeederBike.

  29. Belisaurius July 27, 2009 at 2:57 pm -      #29

Just let me crunch some math.
    400km/h=1/9 km/s
    human reaction time=approx 0.15s
distanced traveled before rider can take action= approximatly 17meters.

Also, considering how ineffective the speeder bike was against vehicles in battlefront, I’d say the blastercannon is no more powerful than the dual plasma rifles on the ghost.

  30. Zervziel August 30, 2009 at 5:44 pm -      #30

Belisaurus, the problem is you’re comparing the effects of SW weaponry on SW heavy armor. Give them both their canon statistics and the Ghost will be owned.

  31. L-W September 26, 2009 at 4:38 am -      #31

I’ve also played F-15 Strike Eagle II, and in that game, an F-15 can take a half-dozen direct hits from SAM’s before it goes down (in reality, one proximity hit will kill it easily). Can we agree that it’s silly to use computer gameplay as a basis for technological assessments?

  32. Tim September 26, 2009 at 6:46 am -      #32

If I wanted to go very fast in a straight line without anything in the way I would pick the speeder bike. If I wanted to get somewhere safely though I would pick the Ghost, not only does it look cooler but it’s seems more manouvreble and it can take a crash better. Plus in universe it’s more durable, offers better protection and has more effective weapons.

  33. L-W September 27, 2009 at 10:46 pm -      #33

    “and has more effective weapons.”

Do you intend to back that up?

  34. L-W September 28, 2009 at 12:10 am -      #34

Anyway, I think it’s time for a second analysis, just to hammer the point home to some of the slower posters:

    1) Weapons:

    A) The Covenant Ghost is packing a pair of twin plasma cannons rated in the 250Kw range, thus:

    250,000W = 250,000 J/s
250,000 J/s * 60s/600 shots (based on the amount of bolts fire per second) = 25,000 J/shot (maximum), or 25 kilojoules (equal to a dozen 7.62 mm rounds).

    B) The Imperial Speeders on the other hand utilizes a pair of Blaster cannons, which are handily described in the novel Shatterpoint:

“A blistering beam of energy hit the outside door just as Maarek followed his mother into the room to investigate. The door glowed for a second, the metal core began to melt, then the whole thing vaporized. Behind it, partially obscured among the fumes and smoke, was a man dressed all in black. In his hand, the blaster cannon glowed.”

Given the room they were living in (airtight, rather secure, windows covered) and that it was a shielded door/blast door of some kind (which means its designed to try to absorb/dissipate the energy of the blaster bolt. We know from the ICS and other sources that SW armor tries to absorb and disperse heat away over a larger surface area, and that’s what we see here).

Melting or vaporizing even a part of that door would require multi-megajoule outputs (for a man operated and lifted blaster cannon, not even the most powerful in their possession). Higher outputs might be double/triple digit MJ depending on how one defines the door’s durability – a heavy blaster probably on the maximum setting.

    2) Speed:

Both the Ghost and the Speeder are designated as reconnaissance vehicles intended for only light combat or infantry support only when necessary; simply due to the limitations of their respective designs they cannot be effectively deployed as independently operated combatants. Case in point, “The Flood”. Without either infantry, armour or air support, over three hundred Ghosts attempt to charge into human picket lines at the bluff, only to be rebounded and eventually crushed under the weight of their own charge, killing hundreds of Elites in the midst of friendly fire, high speed collisions and human artillery.

In the case of speed, the 74-Z wins yet again. With a maximum speed of 500km/h compared to the paltry straight line velocity of 90km/h for the Ghost, the Imperials can safely scout enemy lines, circumvent fortified positions and evade capture if necessary. The Ghost on the other hand is a slow and hulking vehicle that could be chased down by a modern Humvee, or even a Tank, making evasion impossible if the enemy should bring in air support.

    3) Altitude:

The Ghost is limited once again by its limited altitude of only several feet at most, limiting the maneuverability factor significantly due to its inability to traverse uneven rocky ground, forested passages, dense marsh, rubble, shrub or even mine fields where even a minor ground contact would be sufficient as to trigger most conventional explosive ordinance.

The Speeder on the other hand can maintain a maximum altitude of 25 meters, allowing it to safely bypass uneven terrain that would inhibit the movement of most vehicles, or even man made obstructions such as barricades, fences, fortifications or mine fields.

    – – –

    1) “not only does it look cooler”

Why does the rule of cool always appeal to idiots? Rather than something as trivial as safety or utilitarian practicality?

    2) “but it’s seems more manouvreble”

Yes, it “seems” more maneuverable, although this trait comes into question when you account for the fact that this highly advanced reconnaissance vehicle can be chased down and torn to shreds by a modern Humvee (.50 cal rounds would go through that cockpit nicely). At least the Speeder can claim the capability of outmaneuvering most forms of modern air support.

    3) “it can take a crash better”

Game mechanic. In one of the novels, a trio of Ghosts traveling at a mere charge tumble into one another and detonate in a ball of plasma.

“They broke formation and raced ahead of their comrades. Silva saw one attack craft take fire from another Ghost, which crashed into a third machine, which subsequently burst into flame.”

    4) “Plus in universe it’s more durable”

Nope, in the novels a single burst of armour piercing bullets through the front is enough to core the engine and kill the driver. You’re attributing a value to a vehicle that is counter-productive to its field role. As a reconnaissance vehicle it should worry more about speed and evasion, not charging headlong into fortifications.

    5) “offers better protection”

Large, slow, bright purple and can’t take a burst of armour piercing rounds through the thickest and logically the most well armoured compartment. That doesn’t say “I’m better protected than you”, it says “here I am, shoot me right through the open cockpit”.

    6) “and has more effective weapons.”

Clearly not the case according to official sources from both Bungie and Lucas.

i would definately choose the speeder after reading lw’s posts

the only way i can see the ghost actually winning in a fight is if it got off the first shot avoided all incomeing fire and hit the pilot of the speeder directly with enough force to knock him/her off the bike

  36. OriginalA September 28, 2009 at 1:29 am -      #36

Speeder Bike is the better machine, but I would personally choose the Ghost. That is from a strickly civilian stand point though. I would be having too much fun driving the Ghost in weird circles because of its strafing ability and taking it off of dirt jumps to be too bothered about its weak weapons, weak armor, lower speed (even half of the Speeder Bike’s top speed would be far too much for me to handle), and inability to preform extra high G turns which would probably throw me off of the bike.

    Speeder Bike for military applications.
Ghost for use as a futuristic dirt bike mostly because it isn’t as likely for the driver to kill himself without having extensive training before hand on how to handle the machine.

  37. L-W September 28, 2009 at 2:28 am -      #37

If I had to choose a futuristic dirt bike for my own amusement, I would certainly select the Ghost for sheer entertainment value alone.

But if you were being chased down by an Apache, a Banshee or even an F-22, I know I’d rather be behind the sticks of the Speeder and not a slow lumbering (purple) target that can be outraced and outgunned by something as comparatively archaic as a .50 caliber mounted Humvee.

Although in all seriousness, most Speeders cannot be that difficult to operate since the vast majority of civilian models appear to be faster then their military counterparts; in fact the T-47 airspeeder was a civilian model vehicle that could exceed the velocity of the ground speeder by over 500km/h (just over Mach 1). In essence it’s all about practicality and common sense, high powered muscle cars are available to the public, yet you wouldn’t see one operated to the full extent of her capabilities in a built up urban area or a densely forested region unless the driver was feeling particularly reckless or suicidal.

  38. Tim September 28, 2009 at 5:06 am -      #38

I was just basing my comparisons based on gameplay as I have not read the Halo books(yet), I was saying manouverebility(wrong spelling I know) in the Ghost seems better because it can strafe. I also know that Star Wars weapons are much more powerful then Halo ones that’s why I said “in universe”, if I had to choose one of the machines to fight the other I would have to choose the speeder bike due to weapon power differences.

  39. AHEM October 1, 2009 at 4:12 pm -      #39

Speeder Bike wins no problem. I don’t think I need to add anything to what L-W has already outlined. The SB could take a Banshee easily, much less a Ghost.

  40. GeneticReflex December 11, 2009 at 7:30 am -      #40

Hmmm. I’ve always liked the Ghost, mianly because its ability to strafe.(which gave me a major advantage over Warthogs)
But the Speeder can reach speeds of 500kph.
The Speeder could start hitting the Ghost before it even knows whats going on.

  41. Siggymansz January 24, 2010 at 9:53 am -      #41

Funn (2 ens for extra FUNNN) Ghost FTW for wtfpwn Military ops SPEEDER F^CK YEAH!!

  42. Aegis030 June 23, 2010 at 12:53 pm -      #42

    From L-W post #5:
“The maximum speed of the Ghost during combat is limited to 60Km/h, which can be maximized to 90km/h given a speed boost feature that increases its top speed but compromises the manoeuvrability of the craft. ”

in terms of kph = mph. a ghost travels at roughly 37.3 mph and boosted it’s 55.9mph.. yeah, no thanks, i don’t want the grandma driving the 1970 beat up volkswagon passing me.

Don’t even need to translate the speeder bikes mph.
plus the fact it can pretty much fly at low altitudes…

    Star Wars speeder FTW!!!

  43. Paramedic January 19, 2011 at 10:01 pm -      #43

I would definatley want a Ghost. I know game mechanics don’t apply in this debate, but I can always steer and manuever a Ghost so much better than a speeder lol.

I am not sure about actual mechanics but on Star Wars Battlefront II, a speeder bike can 1-shot any infantry.
(technically speeking plasma should as well but like I said, game mechanics)
I would think the Ghost is more durable however. While speeder bikes are fast as hell, they leave the driver as relatively the largest target with no cover.
The driver a ghost has the giant hull infront of him. It doesn’t help much, but it helps.

“But the Speeder can reach speeds of 500kph.”
Yes, if you can find most battlefields suitable to attain this speed then that is fine.
Most battlefields aren’t large enough to acommodate this kind of speed.
But if they were, OH BOY Ghost better watch out.

I think this is to the users safety, as far as speed goes.
500k/hr (310 mph) Is too fast for most any ground based vehicle to function correctly. Also, the user had better have excellent reflezes or be force sensitive.
Ghost’s I find are more practical in a closed setting, their speed could be faster, but 310 MPH is a little eccentric.

  44. Jolttra May 17, 2013 at 1:37 am -      #44

In terms of practicallity in battle, both have their advantages.

As LW has basicly hammerd into us, the Speeder Bike is way fast, far more manuverable (at least at high speed), and its blaster can do more damge then the plasma cannons on the ghost. This makes it a superior recon vehicle and perfect for fast surgiacl srikes against patrols and convoys.

The Ghost’s lower speed and retarded choice of camouflage (purple… really?) make it a less effect recon craft. However, its impressive strafing ability and more rapid fire weapons make it a decent support craft for attacing lightly armed and armord infantry.

Also, I just want to point out that just because SW generally has stronger armor, doesn’t mean so in this case. The Speeder Bike was desined for speed, not for direct combat. As such it has several unarmored sections leaving it vulnerable. Not to mention that Scout troopers (the elite troops who usually pilot Speeder Bikes) have the thinest armor of any rank in the empire. And Rebel and New Republic Speeder pilots usually don’t wear any armor at all. So the Speeeder is still vulnerable to plasma fire as is its pilot. Not that it makes that much of a diffrence, seeing how the Speeder is way to small and fast to be hit in the first place.

If I were to create my own Sci-fi army (a thought I often fanticise) I would use Speeders for recon on the front lines and reduse the Ghost to internal patrol and MP support. Assuming I can’t find a more sutable vehicle, that is. (I’m sure there is I just can’t think of one off the top of my head.) So to me at least the Ghost is a more sutible recon and combat vehicle.

(P.S., now that I’ve thought about it the AT-RT, AT-PT, Vulture and Hellion from Starcraft, and the Raider Buggy from C&C3 all come to mind as superior vehicles over the Ghost.)

  45. Jolttra May 17, 2013 at 1:42 am -      #45

“So to me at least the Ghost is a more sutable racon and combat vehicle”
…… The F@ck? I didn’t meant to post that. I meant the Speeder it superior.
