Favorite OST

Suggested by Numinous One

So to take a break from debates and wanting to yell at stubborn internet strangers, what is your favourite Original Sountrack?

They can come from any show/movie, regardless of language, if it’s music and you like it, post it.

Or you could simply post your favourite song currently, or something from an obscure band or musician that may not be well known.

Just spread some awareness for interesting music, even the shows they come from.

Hans Zimmer has never failed to amaze me.
Inception, Dark Knight, & Interstellar all had brilliant Soundtracks. It definitely helped make them the incredible movies that they are.

Pick of Destiny is probably the best “musical” movie that comes to mind. Gotta love Tenacious D.
Can’t say i’v seen too many others though.

John Williams did very well with the SW various themes, as most people would know.

The main theme of Battlefield 2142 is positively epic. Battlefield Vietnam had a better collection of songs for the overall game though.

The Supreme Commander OST is quite compelling in-game, especially once the formations start moving into battle.

Minecraft OSTs are brilliant for the game. They capture the atmosphere perfectly.

The Sherlock Holmes films had quite good OSTs that fit the style of the setting period.
EDIT: Just realised they were by Hans Zimmer, so no surprises then.

Disney’s theme for the short film Paperman is very, very, very good.

    Duck Tales 8bit.

NFS titles’ OSTs may not be great, but they always become memorable once you play enough.

Pink Panther and Wallace & Gromit also get notable mentions.

    This always gets to me:
My favorite movie soundtrack is probably most, if not all of the Pirates of the Carribean soundtracks. As for a specific song from the soundtrack, He’s a Pirate:

For me so far Steven Universe has had some amazing music in it, Daughters of Mnemosyne has a great opening theme, Cowboy Bebop’s music was well I mean anime wise that is probably the best soundtrack ever. Movies though it’s tougher the original 86 Transformers soundtrack is fucking iconic. A Knight’s Tale was always a favorite, same with The Great Gatsby.

    Mostly video game music but:
Been enjoying Meaning of Birth a lot lately

    Rocking Heart

This is a Fight to Change the World has rather firmly stuck itself into my head

and I’ve always liked Simple and Clean’s remix, it’s the first time I ever restarted a game just to hear the intro over and over again

Games: Halo, the original trilogy + reach. Quality music, and I always appreciate orchestral music in games.

FTL: Faster Than Light. Ben Prunty is a master of the retro-electronic style. FTL is his best work IMO

    Terraria’s got some good pieces.

For all the hate the series gets, I love the Dynasty Warriors soundtrack(s).
    Lu Bu:
    And this more relaxed piece:

The Binding of Isaac. Both rebirth and the original. The entire soundtrack for the first is exceptional, the second, while solid, doesn’t quite stack up.
    Basement theme:
    Rebirth Chest theme:

TV: Cowboy Bebop. While not all of it is original music it’s just so damn jazzy. The theme is iconic, ’nuff said.

Firefly’s got it’s legendary theme song of course, and Serenity has an excellent score as well.

Movies: Star Wars. One area where I value the prequels as much as the originals is the music. Duel of the Fates and Battle of Heroes are supremely crafted. In fact, anything John Williams goes here.

The Producers. Springtime for Hitler and Germany!

Akira has music that fits the film nearly perfectly. Battle Against Clown makes the gang war scene intense, no doubt. The bamboo and traditional instruments make Kaneda’s theme quite unique too.

So many to pick from and many here that I wasn’t aware of before, thanks for sharing!

For me personally, I loved the Daft Punk Tron Legacy OST – www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYJBcr1LDg4

    Gladiator soundtack – www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xQqFDInc5s

Braveheart was stylish until Mel Gibson went apesh!t crazy – www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fbno12ypvM

And one of my favorite unknown bands of all time – Pigface – www.youtube.com/watch?v=WL1-gQt_s2w&list=PLGVAS1VyZkAqqUQf7EwyrBYPnfwsCn_gV

Now, I don’t know a lot about movie soundtracks, but the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit always sounded excellent to me (quality of the Hobbit itself notwithstanding).

The best “musical” music imo is The Nightmare Before Christmas. The songs themselves advance the plot and the characters so well I always forget that the movie is actually a musical.

My favorite video game OST is Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. It’s definitely a love-it-or-hate-it for many people, but I love its blend of rock/metal/orchestra/dubstep, and I’m not even a fan of dubstep to begin with.

    Sucker Punch

    Tron Legacy

    Gundam SEED

Also Code Geass and Bleach have really good music.

  10. Commander Cross March 17, 2015 at 4:40 pm -      #10

Always nice to know I’m not the only one who watched Gundam SEED once.

At any rate, let me fetch some soundtracks in turn, some of them being from Favored Worlds of mine, others not quite as loved but still worth listening, and even more I’ve yet to study.

    Mobile Suit Gundam 00

    Red vs Blue

    Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

Dot Hack(.Hack)//Sign(The Earliest days of the Dot Hack universe, back when Namco x Bandai were STILL Namco x Bandai and that world kept the fanbase and other viewers in-the-loop)

Dot Hack//G.U(The Video Game Trilogy Soundtrack.)

The Madoka Magica Soundtrack(Courtesy of the Main Anime)

Because The World of Madoka Magica is a Spectacular World that’s yet to get much if any Group Fights, and can give The Butcher Side or Dot Hack a Run for their Moolah when needed, I decided to add this soundtrack to take second place on the top of my skull.

Last but most definitely not least:

Watch the following on Netflix before March 2015 arrives to an end and Happy St. Patrick’s Day Ladies and Gentlemen. 😀

    I now give you all…

    Dot Hack//Quantum!!!!

Well, this is a long-ass list, because apparently I really love soundtracks.
    Video Games
Shadow of Mordor has some good music. Though, they didn’t have to make original words.
Mass Effect (all of them, but 3 mostly) had some pretty good songs.
Though, I might have to go with Dragon Age Inquisition. “The Dawn Will Come” FTW.
    Movies (live-action and animated)
I can’t really remember any background music soundtracks, so I must not have liked them that much.
I generally like musicals, though. Ex: Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Most Disney movies; especially Frozen, Mulan, & Hunchback.
    Princess Mononoke
Fairy Tail (especially the opening themes).
    Shows (live-action and animated)
Young Justice and RWBY because they set the tone well.
MLP: FiM, though that may be partially because I like the voices.

  12. sadot06 March 17, 2015 at 6:35 pm -      #12

Now this is my kind of match. I love OST’s more than anything. I’ll watch an ok or even mediocre movie or show if the soundtrack is awesome.

Hans Zimmer is my fave, and I noticed he’s referenced quite a bit here. But yeah Inception, Dark knight, Gladiator, the Lion King, the dude is a genius.

I also loved what Clint Mansell did on The Fountain. Death is the Road to Awe is one of my favorite songs ever: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr0NBPRMe2E

Friday Night Lights – both the show and movie – had amazing music. A lot of post-rock, ambient guitar. Explosions in the Sky did the bulk of it. W.G. Walden Snuffy did the show’s intro though and it’s outstanding: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9buIAYnpUNM&list=PLHz8EVuKF6RBJlrE0ciOCgrplcg1EfOXW

Angel Beats is one of my favorite animes of all time and the music is 80% of it. Though the story is also really good: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_kW1V1ya6w&list=PL251F949563B531AC

It’s not from a movie but Hammock’s Depart Songs is in my opinion one of the greatest albums ever and the music would sound incredible in a movie: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UlTJR9FY8Y

And if you’ve never seen Lost, you should because it’s a transcendent show and the music is also outstanding.

I almost forgot Final Fantasy! I love the music from Final Fantasy X and X2. Gotta listen to To Zankarand: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLU2xQ4nkk4

And Eternity Memories of Lightwaves: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NTO_3UZzVY

John Williams, Hans Zimmer, goodness, I could make a list of composers and the songs they had.
Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Amazing Spiderman, Inception, and Interstellar.
    Now for the cartoons.
The Touch. The scenes where it plays twice also helps.
The main theme for the movie
Speaking of the theme of the show, here’s the second season.
And the Transformers Animated version was also great.
    Here’s a different theme song
    Transformers Prime Beast Hunters

Looks like Alpha and I have a pretty similar taste in music. Not to piggy back on him or anything, since I love all of the osts he used. Since he posted a bunch of themes from Mega Man, Metroid, and Castlevania, I probably won’t be reposting those ones. Instead I’m going to post some of my other favorite tunes from some of the OSTs that Alpha posted.

    Gundam Wing:
The wings of a boy who killed adolescence:

When the dragon swims, everything ends:

    Mission Accomplished:

    Use the Cloak of Darkness:

Post link limit approaching, so I’ll continue on to Gundam 00, Mega Man, MGS, MGR, Metroid, etc.

“I see Alpha really got into the spirit of this one haha”
You have no idea. I am a fan of some movies, comics, tv shows, anime etc, but I am a huge fan of practically all of the video games there are and will be.
Soundtracks that come are part of it.
    Anyway, back to business.
Raid in Strider 2014. Sometimes called Strider Hiryu’s theme.
“Winds of Madness” Resident of Evil 5.
When I played this game as a kid, this sounded scary to me.
Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero. Dance Through the Danger

Looks like I don’t have to post Bayonetta.
    @theobserver/Spectral Observer
    LoL. I’m really sorry.
    Moar Shantae
“Scuttle Town”. Remix of the “Dance room” of the first game.
    “We Love Burning Town”
    “Rave in the Grave”

Put too much links in the last post, gah!

Mega Man! This franchise is insanely full of great catchy tunes, and it is generally considered a sin to have just one favorite song in the series. That said, aside from the oft-cited Wily Stage 1-2 from Mega Man 2, here are some of my favorites from the recent entries:
    Flash in the dark:

    Abandoned Memory:

    Solar Inferno

    Get the punk out:

MMX and MMZ are harder to pin down since I love them all, but I’ll get to that in the next post I guess.

  36. Spectral Observer March 17, 2015 at 11:22 pm -      #36

    Final Fantasy.
I love me some 6 and 7(no matter how overrated).
The Decisive Battle. Suplex a train, will ya?
The Regular Battle Theme in 6.
One Winged Angel in Advent Children
The victory theme from pretty much all of them.
    The Chocobo themes

Not really an OST, but I really like these two songs:

Also liked this song from the DmC remake.

For whatever reason, The Raid 2 remake of Sarabande by Handel really gets me, especially in the scene it’s played in. Spoilers in case you plan on watching the movie later.

And just a random interesting song, but Van Canto’s cover of Blind Guardian’s The Bard Song.

  39. Alpha or Omega March 17, 2015 at 11:30 pm -      #39

    Fire Emblem
“Vow” from Path of Radience. It was a remix of the one in the 7th game.
All of its main themes. Nearly one hour.
“Together We Ride”. DS version. The one people mistake as Fire Emblems main theme because SSBM. The main theme is near the end of Melee’s version.
    “Winning Road”

No worries! Your posts just gave me the reason I needed to delve into my other favorites. Looks like you and Wingedlion got DMC and Bayonetta covered pretty well. I love Lumen Sage and Temperantia! I loved You may call me Father from the first game’s OST, but I think that song is flat out better. Not by much, mind you, but enough to be acknowledged.

  41. Alpha or Omega March 17, 2015 at 11:36 pm -      #41

    From Awakening
    “Don’t Speak her Name”

    Metroid Prime Menu:

    Tallon Overworld II

That’s…all I can think of at the moment without crossing into the ones Alpha already posted.

Super Smash Bros remixes some of the themes from the main games.
They’re good, but I like the originals better sometimes. However, there are some remixes I like better than the original such as
    “Mach Rider”
SSB do have some originals though.
    “Final Destination”. Melee version.
    “Metal Battle”
The main theme, that also plays at E3.

Oh man, this is a good subject to discuss. Quite a few come off the top of my head.

Probably the most nostalgic OST to me is from Chrono Cross. For it’s time it had really great selection of music:

    “Time Scar”

    “Edge of Death”

    “Home Arni”

    “Reminiscence Feelings not Forgotten”

    “Shadows End Forest”

And a Danny’s (from Game Grumps) song remixed, just because I enjoyed it so much. Not technically an OST, but I think it deserves to be added.

Dark Souls has some amazing sound tracks too, makes you really tense no matter if you are fighting a boss for the first time, or the 50th:

While these aren’t technically OST’s from Majora’s Mask, they still are something people should take the time to listen to:

It doesn’t have any individual links to each song, but they should all be on the first page to that website. “Clocktown” and “Time’s End” are my favorites .

Haha it’s fine honestly, if there are any that weren’t on my list that you want to add, go ahead. The ones I had stuck out to me the most. You were at least more specific with Shadow of the Colossus.

Heh, I got that impression. Alpha and Wingedlion got a bunch of the DMC and Bayonetta OSTs that I wanted to post so it gave me the chance to post other songs that stuck out to me. Some of these franchises are honestly so long that it’s hard to pick favorites.

That said, you got all of the Dark Souls themes I was going to post, so I erased mine so there wouldn’t be doubles.

  73. TheSorrow March 18, 2015 at 12:42 am -      #73

An odd addition to my list, but I really liked a particularly song from CastleVille:

I try to keep up my reputation every once in awhile. But seriously, I would just equate most of my ninjas to just plain luck haha.

Some of these franchises are honestly so long that it’s hard to pick favorites.

Yeah, I’m having a hard time trying not to spam, because I keep thinking of really good sound tracks to games I have played.

That said, you got all of the Dark Souls themes I was going to post, so I erased mine so there wouldn’t be doubles.

Oh, cool I’m glad I was able to cover it all. Can’t say I know anything about Dark Souls 2’s sound track though. Never really got into it.

  75. Alpha or Omega March 18, 2015 at 12:48 am -      #75

“Yeah, I’m having a hard time trying not to spam, because I keep thinking of really good sound tracks to games I have played.”

I’m starting to have the opposite problem. I’m currently out of ideas because there are so many games out there that I can’t focus on a single one.

“Can’t say I know anything about Dark Souls 2’s sound track though. Never really got into it.”

I don’t remember too much about Dark Souls 2 right now, because the game wasn’t that memorable to me either. It just felt too easy and nothing really stuck out to me in terms of music or mechanics. Maybe I’m just bitter over lost potential.

  78. Aelfinn March 18, 2015 at 12:55 am -      #78

Damn it, how do I forget Dark Souls and Shadow of the Collosus? Fantastic games and fantastic soundtracks. Both rather interesting, though, in that most of their music only comes in during boss fights. Their music is used just enough to properly deliver the emotion they want you to feel, whether it be terror or awe or both. Goddamn, I love the music during the Third Collosus, Gaping Dragon, and Taurus Demon fights. They’re not particularly difficult fights, btw (some might even say easy after a point), but nothing instills the same terror quite like the Taurus Demon OST, and the music of the Third Collosus is as awe-inspiring as you can get.

  79. TheSorrow March 18, 2015 at 1:06 am -      #79

I’m starting to have the opposite problem. I’m currently out of ideas because there are so many games out there that I can’t focus on a single one.

Yeah, that’s true, I could be blanking on a few excellent ones for all I know.

Damn it, how do I forget Dark Souls and Shadow of the Collosus?

    For shame Aelfinn!

Goddamn, I love the music during the Third Collosus, Gaping Dragon, and Taurus Demon fights

The Gaping Dragon fight was all about the visuals for me personally. Seeing that tiny snake-like head peak over the waterfall, only to reveal a giant maw filled to the brim with spiny teeth? Easily one my favorite boss, in terms of presentation and design for Dark Souls. Even if it is probably the easiest boss to fight.

Gwyn and Sif in particular had the most emotional attachment to me. Sif’s fight was very sad when put into context with the Manus DLC, and Gwyn’s was melancholy. Seeing him in such a withered state.

Now for the silly hat mercenaries of Team Fortress 2 who are paid to shoot each other. These reflect the silliness that goes on.
“The Main Theme” though, is catchy.
“A Little Heart to Heart” and “MEDIC!” Tells you how insane the Medic is, which is played for laughs. Where, he surgically takes out your heart, makes it explode, and shoves a bigger heart in you. Oh, did he tell you how he lost his medic degree?
    “Dreams of Cruelty”
What Pyro sees: Spreading happiness, sunshines, rainbows and cupids.
What everyone sees: Pyro setting everything on fire.
    “Dapper Cadaver”
Spy and Scout have a little talk.

    Kushi’s ride:

    Reset~Thank You Version

    Rising Sun:

I first heard Rising Sun as Amaterasu’s theme in MvC3, where it was more techno than traditional Japanese. I thought that it was a more recurring theme of the game, but didn’t come across it until right near the very end. The buildup leading to that moment was immense, and when the theme finally started playing, I simply had to drop the controller for a second in pure awe. It was truly one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in recent years, and it made me go completely all-out on the final boss without remorse for the items I was wasting away as the song hyped me up along the way. That victory felt so sweet after that, and the crescendo of events even more so afterwards.

“Seeing that tiny snake-like head peak over the waterfall, only to reveal a giant maw filled to the brim with spiny teeth?”

Am I the only one that found the Gaping Dragon absolutely adorable even after the big reveal? I don’t think I could stop laughing at it as it continuously rammed the walls. Of course, I wasn’t laughing as much when it corroded all my weapons and armor.

Now as for Anime, there is probably a lot of songs I am forgetting, but I will try to remember some of the more important ones to me. I don’t remember much about the Lodoss Wars itself, but the beginning has stuck in my head for years.

    “Record of Lodoss War”

Outlaw Star had a heart wrenchingly beautiful ending themes to it, it encapsulates my experience of Anime at young age:

    “Hiru no Tsuki”

    “Tsuki no le”

While there are plenty of songs in Cowboy Bebop, the most obvious being the main theme (anyone with a passing interest in Anime has probably heard it at least once), the one I enjoy the most is the one after Spike gets thrown out of the window by Vicious:

And of course, the DBZ OST, I am astonished no one else has mention this so far. Very different from your average Anime opening, using rock, but it was very effective:

While the lyrics are somewhat simplistic, no one could deny it made you bounce of the walls with anticipation to see what the newest episode was going to bring.

    Because I love you:

    Smiles and Tears:

It’s still a little hard not to feel a light tug at my heart strings whenever I listen to the last two songs. After such a long journey, it’s hard not to feel a little melancholic if not cathartic to see all the places you’ve been to, the people you’ve met, and the friends that you’ve made over the course of the game. As the music plays, everyone says goodbye, branching off into their own lives with the promise of new adventure while you, the player, are allowed to retrace all your steps and walk back to the home that’s been waiting for you since the beginning of the game, and the relaxed return to normal life. As comforting as it feels for the world to be back to normal though, it’s hard not to feel a small tinge of nostalgia for everything that you’ve done, from the triumphs to the lows, and the hard work in between. You’ve been there in the journey the whole way, and as the curtain closes and Ness goes back home, you are made to realize that you too have to go back to your own life, knowing that your friends will always be waiting for you in another world.

Curse you and your similar tastes! I wanted to post Pokey means business and the Attic’s a dungeon. Those are two of my favorite themes in Earthbound/Mother 3. I am joking of course…mostly.

    “Natural Killer Cyborg”
“Battle Against the Masked Man” *spoilers* who is actually your brother. The same brother that your father was looking for and neglected you for. The same brother that you missed, is now brainwashed and trying to kill you.
    “It’s Over”

    “16 Melodies”
A fantastic way to combine two touching songs to close the Mother series.
This song, “Ai no Uta” help contribute to Pikmin, and the song even outsold the game.
Here’s why in english fan dub.
    And french apparently.
We work hard, because we love you. We don’t care if you don’t love us back. We will work for you even if it means our death, but only for your survival.

    “N’s Room”
Huh, this one sounds familiar to one of the Mother themes I posted.
    “N’s Farewell”
    Now for Ace Attorney
“Pursuit Cornered” Give up your evil ways. You’re finished!
    Gumshoe’s theme. He’s a detective.

The Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack. All of it.
I must thank OriginalA for introducing me to this.
Funny, and ridiculous. Also dark and sad.
“Legend tells of an artifact that can grant a woman’s wish… The Skull Heart. However, if she is impure of heart, her wish will be corrupted and she will be turned into an immensely powerful, twisted being of destruction… The Skullgirl. ”
“The Legend of the Skull Heart”
    “The Lives we Left Behind”
    “vs Bloody Marie”
“The Lives we Tried to Reclaim”
    Ladies and gents, it’s showtime!

Battlefield 2’s Theme Song was great. Spent over 1000 hours playing that game spanning 5 years, and still would if more people played it.
