What if…Mace Windu didn’t die in Episode III?

Mace Windu

Would the Jedi Council still be intact?
Would Windu eventually face and/or defeat Darth Vader?
Would Yoda ever go to Dagobah?
Would purple colored lightsabers still be bad-ass?

And what better way to start this new section that with this massive connundrum? I also think that the ramifications of this single man not having been killed is of a much bigger impact than what might be thought initially.

Ill go so far as to sy that the Empire would have never come to be, or would have been very short lived. With Windu alive, Yoda and Obi-wan would not have gone into hiding. An offensive would have been mounted between these three. A sort of Shadow Council.

Together, they would have been capable of defeating both Vader and the Emperor.

I think it goes further and deeper than that, but Ill let other more knowledgeable SW fans put their 2 cents.

Well think, the only actual way that Mace would have survived is that either Vader wasn’t such a whiny pansy or that he also defeated Anakin. Either way the Emperor is dead and Anakin is either dead or still Anakin (Plus the Jedi won the war and are “all” alive since Order 66 wasn’t…ordered). So ideally, Padme would have survived the twins would have grown up in the Jedi temple and known their father, etc, etc, etc.

What we can expect after this point in infinite….however it would have made a possibly less cool episodes 4, 5, and 6…..

The Jedi would have lived. The Sith would be destroyed. Like Alpha Commando said Anakin may live, andhe could’ve learned to control his emotions and stayed a jedi instead of being corrupted. The Clones would still work for the Republic. Actually what I said earlier, Anakin would have survived because he had mixed emotions about:
    1. Padme’s safety
    2. his anger towards the council for not trusting him.
Mace Windu said that Anakin would have his trust if what he said about Palpatine is true. Mace Windu’s influence alone could bring him to the rank of Master. The threat within quite a few years would be over, BUT the Sith would eventually rise again although they would not have the clones on their side. The Sith rose at first due to jedi letting emotions get the best of them, using the force as a weapon, just having a lust for power. That’s how dark jedi rose in the firstplace. They then went to the planet that the original sith lived on. The Sith were an alien species that the dark jedi enslaved. The dark jedi then became known as “Sith Lords”. They were eventually known as Sith, but their masters were still known as Sith Lords. Now that I gave a speech on the sith’s history, you all know that the Sith would eventually rise.

Instead of Luke and Leia exploring the galaxy with Han Solo in the Millenium Falcon, dodging TIE fighters and taking shots at the Empire and ultimately going on to produce one of the most engrossing tales in Human history; we would have had one of the least necessary trilogies produced since the Matrix.

For Mace to survive he would have to strike down the Emperor during his arrest; and possibly curtail or kill Anakin before he sways towards the Dark side. Therefore there would be no Empire, no uprising and the prophecy would never be fulfilled; which would no doubt anger the force in so many ways that it would have to alter the entire timeline somehow as to destroy the Jedi either way.

If Mace would have just struck down the Sidious before or as Anakin walked into the room Anakin would have never swayed to the dark side he would have just worried until he realized Padme survives.

Let me explain the “Shadow Council” scenario I was thinking of.

While engaging Sidious, Mace sensed the approaching Anaking and readied himself for the exange (perhaps even tapping into the Force to catch a glimpse of the possible outcomes). After Skywalker gets to the senator’s chambers and starts to engage the Jedi Master, Windu makes a full retreat and jumps out the window (safely, of course).

Outraged by the Jedi’s escape, Sidious still manages to prod Anakin to the Dark Side while activating Order 66 before Windu alerts the other Jedi. Many Jedi still fall, but a good number survive the cataclismic event as they were not actively interacting with the clones.

The survivors of 66 manage to go into hiding and rendevous, while palpatine starts to build his empire.

I think this scenario is not so farfetched, and while it might alter all that we know of episode 4 and onward, things might still reflect a struggle.

Anakin and Obi-wan may still face-off, possibly with the same outcome.

The twins may still be split after Padme’s death.

The Rebelion would still be formed, with the few surviving Jedi at the helm.

Fearful of the Jedi still running loose, Palpatine may still be actively recruiting promissing Sith instead of keeping things close with just him and Vader.

Vader may still be resentful, and while still having the secret Starkiller, he may also be the Sith Lord training the Emperor’s prospects.

Too many other fine details to think of right now, but still quite an interesting story.

If Mace Windu doesn’t die (and we’re not even 100% certain he actually DID die) in III, then I think he would just have done what the other Jedi did and run and hide… probably in Brooklyn or South Philly or something, just to blend in. He could hook up with Travolta and be a real bad ass.

  13. HeroofTime85 November 25, 2008 at 7:53 pm -      #13

If Mace hadn’t died, Vader wouldn’t have existed and in his place the most powerful jedi, Anakin (at his peak) would fight off any arisisng threat.

  16. ElectricDC December 24, 2008 at 4:02 am -      #16

If Mace would have survived it would mostly if not all be the same. He probobly would have been arrested for attempted murder and or killed by someone else. Order 66 would have still happened and mabye, just mabye Mace would have survived and went on to lead a rebelion and ultimately kill Darth Vader and Palpatine. But the Jedi would still be weak and Luke would have never found out who he was, or mabye he would have…

  17. windiethinker January 28, 2009 at 1:12 am -      #17

This maybe wishful thinking but it may have been possible for Mace to survive his battle with Palpatine. It is possible that Mace could have used the force to literally “break his fall” after been thrown from the Sith’s lightening attack.

The best theory i got is somehow he was aged and sent back in time and took up the identity of Jolee Bindo in the KOTOR series. I can totally see Mace Windu becoming him.

  20. cyborg pirate ninja jesus May 27, 2009 at 7:24 am -      #20

if he had lived that would probably mean that he would have killed the emporer and the empire would not have begun….also there would be no vader because anakin hadnt been trained fully and probably never would have turned against his masters

  21. Captain Epic July 4, 2009 at 12:48 am -      #21

I don’t think Fett could kill Mace Windu.

  22. tartorus April 22, 2012 at 6:51 pm -      #22

Windu was more powerful than sidious. He beat him in one on one combat after sidious killed the others in a grand total of 10-15 seconds. He most likely would have joined up with yoda and kenobi. Yoda would probably take on skywalker and Windu would have fought sidious. kenobi would either of sat out the assasination attempts or joined windu on the attack on sidious. Yoda would easily kill skywalker and Windu an kenobi after an intense struggle would have killed sidious. The senate would likely vote on war against the jedi so the clone army would hunt down jedi like before. With windu the jedi would be capable of an organized geurilla war against the empire. if the jedi were smart they would reactivate and take control of the droid army from mustafar and the civil war would have continued without any sith.

Samuel L. Ja-erm Mace Windu would still be killing muthafuckas everywhere.

  25. Glutinous-Bicarbonate December 4, 2013 at 11:13 pm -      #25

By “Windu didn’t die” I assume you mean he won his duel and killed Palpatine.

    In that case he:

-Bitchslaps Skywalker for being an idiot.
-Informs the council of this discovery.
-Immediately sets up somebody trustworthy as temporary chancellor.
-Grievous is still dead, and without Palpatine’s leadership, the Confederacy begins to rapidly lose the war.
-Padme lives, Anakin remains on the Light side. Skywalker may end up voluntarily leaving the Jedi Order anyways, and becomes another of the Lost Jedi, so that he can live with Padme, or he may admit his transgressions and be excommunicated or whatever.
-Sith are basically wiped out forever.
-Clone War ends, and this probably leads to a massive reformation in the Republic and Jedi to avoid someone like Palpatine fucking with the Galaxy again.
-Likely involves large scale demilitarization efforts.
    -Things are decently peaceful again.
    -A few years pass.
-Nom Anor and the rest of the Yuuzhan-Vong assrape the Galaxy with their spiny pain worshiping dicks.

    BAD END.

I’m personally of the opinion that if it were not for Palpatine’s massive buildup during his reign, and the years of conflict afterwards keeping the Galaxy on it’s toes and battle-ready, they wouldn’t have stood a chance against the Yuuzhan-Vong.

  26. OberHeresy December 4, 2013 at 11:22 pm -      #26

But now the would have Yoda and Mace Windu vs. the Vong. And since the five-year-old inside me still refuses to believe anything in SW can beat Yoda…..Pfft, stomp for the good guys.

  27. Xornell December 4, 2013 at 11:25 pm -      #27

“-Nom Anor and the rest of the Yuuzhan-Vong assrape the Galaxy with their spiny pain worshiping dicks.”

So basically what happened anyway? Except, now there’s Mace Windu and a galaxy full of Jedi and Clone Wars remnants left alive. I think they’d have fucked the Vong up.

“I’m personally of the opinion that if it were not for Palpatine’s massive buildup during his reign, and the years of conflict afterwards keeping the Galaxy on it’s toes and battle-ready, they wouldn’t have stood a chance against the Yuuzhan-Vong.”

Palpatine’s shit was mostly gone by the time of the New Republic. His massive armies, fleets, his personal collection of superweapons and self-reproducing death factories… Everything. That’s really why the SW galaxy got hit so hard. If the Vong had arrived during Palpatine’s reign, he would’ve obliterated them and would’ve been the galaxy’s hero. Luke was really the dick in Star Wars, seeing as helping overthrow the Emperor killed 365 trillion.

  28. Glutinous-Bicarbonate December 4, 2013 at 11:38 pm -      #28

I don’t quite agree. After learning about Palpatine trying to engineer the Empire, I think a lot of Senators would be moving for a lot of demilitarization, which is what Padme was already doing just before the Clone Wars broke out and the GAR was authorized. They would have had more Jedi, yeah, but I doubt they’d have even the same military forces as they did when the Vong showed up in the original events.

  29. Xornell December 4, 2013 at 11:50 pm -      #29

“They would have had more Jedi, yeah, but I doubt they’d have even the same military forces as they did when the Vong showed up in the original events.”

It’s only like, 50 years after. And the Republic would be capable of rebuilding their army if need be. We saw the Republic create a sizable army and navy in practically no time during the Clone Wars. That’s if the galaxy was even fully demilitarized by then.

It’s kind of a weird thing to speculate about, since there are sooo many different ways the galaxy could’ve turned out before the YV war. I wouldn’t think they’d do any worse than the New Republic did, though.

  30. Glutinous-Bicarbonate December 5, 2013 at 12:06 am -      #30

Maybe not. But we can agree that if Palpatine’s Empire had remained, the Yuuzhan-Vong wouldn’t have stood a chance.

  31. jedipilot24 November 13, 2014 at 10:59 am -      #31

A lot of people seem convinced that Palpatine is the Shatterpoint and that if he dies, everything will get better. But since the Vong have been brought up, I’m going to assume that the EU in general is fair game.
Here’s the situation as I would write in a fanfic:
    Ahsoka remains Anakin’s apprentice.
In the Chancellor’s office, she sees Palpatine and immediately attacks. Palpatine stops her with Force Lightning and flings her backwards but this attack on someone he cares about activates Anakin’s combat instincts and he strikes down Palpatine before he even knows what’s happened.
So the Sith are destroyed, yay!
But it wouldn’t change much because Palpatine’s Deputy Chancellor, Sano Sauro, also hates the Jedi.
So the moment he sees the security footage, which can be easily gotten to him by Sate Prestage, Mas Amedda and Sly Moore, bam, out goes Order 66.
Now since Anakin would be defending the Temple, Operation Knightfall probably wouldn’t be as successful, but would still cause some causalities.
So, in spite of a nail, the Jedi Order is still effectively destroyed and discredited. And if, by chance, Sano Sauro somehow manages to form the Empire, then he’ll end up as the ambitious but weak and isolated Emperor controlled by his Evil Advisors. Just as it says in the Journal of Whills in the ANH novelization, only this time it’s actually true.
Would make for an interesting alternative Saga.
