Jade Curtiss Vs Roy Mustang

Jade Curtiss Vs Roy Mustang

Suggested by Private Khaos

Jade Curtiss (first time here) from Tales of the Abyss (first appearance today) squares off  against Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist.

Jade can use all of his fonic artes at full power without any casting time. Random Fields of Fonons also appear on the battlefield at 2 minute intervals.

Battle takes place in an abbandoned football stadium.

Loser has to buy the victor a drink.

    Fullmetal Alchemist, a place where a guy like this
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2H6Ex88klk
    could have the power to make these
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=qn_HFEDNZ_Q

    So what can Mr. Curtiss do?

  2. shurikan February 13, 2015 at 9:53 am -      #2

    I know a bit about Mustang,care to give us some facts on Curtiss??

    Does full power mean he can remove his glasses? Because Jade doesn’t really need them to see, they’re actually a power limiter. They help him control Fonons, and without them his power can cause things to explode. He uses a spear in battle, and can fuse its atoms to his arms in a way that it’s like wearing a glove. At the age of nine, he created the art of Fomicry, essentially cloning.

    aselia.wikia.com/wiki/TotA_-_Jade_Curtiss:_Artes
    These are all the Artes Jade can use.
    While he doesn’t have any Artes for it, (Only Luke and Tear do) Jade has a small amount of control over the Sound Fonon. The Sound Fonon is notable for its massive destructive capabilities, which can extend as far as removing matter from existence.

    Jade’s a powerful Necromancer and Fonic Arte user (also my favorite of all Tales characters- I cosplay him). When he first joins your party he one-shots a difficult boss you’ve been facing. His power is later sealed from him and he spends the entire game unsealing his power again.

    That’s a fanmade fighting game, but it does show his artes as more or less identical to how they are in his game.

    Anime version of one of his Mystic Artes, his strongest attacks.

    Here’s Mystic Cage, his other Mystic Arte.

    Jade’s biggest problem here is casting times, as that’s canon for the Tales series. I’ve not watched all of the anime adaption, but I don’t recall Jade having any really good speed feats either.

    Err- okay, read the description- that’s just a little silly.
    So Jade has no cast times just because… define “no casting time” please. Tales users require both spoken words and specific arm movements to use their spells, are you really taking all of that away so he can just use his spells at will?

    ^I see what you did thar.

    Yeah, instantaneous flame death should win this for Mustang.

    Mustang casting speed:

    Also, in another video, he was shown to be able to target specific organs like the tongue or eyeballs and melt the fluids away instantly:

    Some explanations of his powers and some neat showings, cut to 1:37:

    @friendlysociopath

    By no casting time I mean he can just cast his fonic artes without saying anything or making any motions. Thought it even things up against Mustang since all he needs is to snap his fingers to make things burst into flames

  8. Private Khaos February 13, 2015 at 2:38 pm -      #8

    Also I’m at a convention so unfortunately I can’t really participate in this until maybe much later. Someone else post Jade feats for me please. Horrible timing for this to be posted

  9. pimpmage February 13, 2015 at 2:44 pm -      #9

    Holy shit thats annoying. I copy the youtube urls at a specific time and for some reason the switch to show inside the comment without the specific time quoted. It only showed the url’s at specific times a few mins after i posted it, and now it looks like that…

    @Khaos
    Okay, so at will casting for Jade, he’s limited only by speed of mind. For the record, I approve of the Colonel Battle- but Tales characters are kind of weak as far as I’m concerned, much as I love the series.

    That said his mind is damn fine. He’s regarded as the smartest person in his entire universe. Think scientific advancement incarnated in a body and given a smartass temperament and extreme wit. So he should be casting pretty fast.

    The problem is his spells just take longer to function than Mustang’s alchemy. His alchemy is near-instant in both casting and effect times. Casting time for Jade has been removed, but his spells still take a few seconds to “go”. The fireballs need to travel, the ice needs to spike from the ground, the giant magic circle needs to appear etc.

    Uh let’s see, I feel like the anime would be more useful for feats and I haven’t watched it. Most of the game is usually built around everyone else doing things.

  11. Private Khaos February 13, 2015 at 5:50 pm -      #11

    @friendlysociopath

    Indignation is basically a giant overkill lightning bolt and iirc lightning is near instant. Also I thought this be a good match because I watched FMA before played TotA and Jade is basically Roy Mustang in terms of sarcastic remarks. So sarcastic colonel vs sarcastic colonel to sum it up. And Jade does have water artes like Splash and Blessed Drops which can maybe counter Mustang’s fire. Actually he can use that to drench his gloves unless we use Brotherhood version at the end when he can just clap to use Alchemy

  12. Ragnorke February 14, 2015 at 6:45 am -      #12

    If Curtiss can cast things with just a thought, doesn’t that make it an insta-win for him?
    Mustang still needs to snap his fingers, which is a few hundred times slower than a thought…

    How fast do Curtisses attacks move? or are they not projectile based?

  13. Friendlysociopath February 14, 2015 at 9:33 am -      #13

    @Rag
    I posted a few videos in comment #4. The first 10 seconds or so are from the official anime adaption. While he can cast the spells at will, they still take some time to go off. The first video is a fanmade fighting game where they sped up spellcasting, in his real game it’s longer to cast and for the effect to happen.

    How fast do Curtisses attacks move? or are they not projectile based?

    The magic circle has to appear and the effects have to manifest. Some are projectile based like “fireball”, others form a circle underneath the target and then unleash the magic, like “eruption”. Most projectiles are pretty slow. Many spells can be dodged simply by moving quickly enough.

    Put simply, there’s casting time and then time for the spell to take effect. Khaos removed casting time, but the spells don’t go off instantly. They don’t have a major delay, only a few seconds at best, but they’re not instant.

    Huh, speaking of fighting games, new Dissidia in the works, 3v3 feature available and combat system was completely redone

    “Huh, speaking of fighting games, new Dissidia in the works, 3v3 feature available and combat system was completely redone”

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

  16. Nsl98 February 14, 2015 at 11:58 am -      #16

    New Dissidia? Oh yeah!

  17. Private Khaos February 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm -      #17

    Ok, yes. New Dissidia is exciting and I can’t wait too but let’s not get too off track here. Anyways, I’d love to help find feats and vids for Jade to help show what his fonic artes can do but I’m at a convention. In theory though wouldn’t Turbulence be able to shred Mustang’s gloves rendering them useless?

  18. Friendlysociopath February 14, 2015 at 1:35 pm -      #18

    Anyways, I’d love to help find feats and vids for Jade to help show what his fonic artes can do but I’m at a convention.

    Unless you have easy access to the anime adaption, feats really aren’t strong points for Tales characters while in the game. Especially if you’re not the main character. I’ve been down this road before, it’s a hard one to walk.
    Jade’s feared the world over for being brilliant and powerful, but the standards for that aren’t exceptionally high.

    In theory though wouldn’t Turbulence be able to shred Mustang’s gloves rendering them useless?

    Has turbulence been shown to be strong enough to tear fabric? And would it destroy the gloves before Mustang snaps his fingers?

    I’m going to be endlessly asking if you have the anime on-hand because Jade’s magic is almost never used outside of battle in the game (compared to say, Luke atomizing that entire mining city with his resonance) so we don’t really know how destructive it is unless you have something from the anime.

    I did manage to find an artes video
    Jade starts @6:15

  19. Private Khaos February 14, 2015 at 5:38 pm -      #19

    Here’s a list of all his Fonic artes and what they can do

    aselia.wikia.com/wiki/TotA_-_Jade_Curtiss:_Artes

    And I looked all over for clips of Jade using his artes in the anime but I couldn’t find anything that hasn’t been shown already on this match. I’ve seen the anime so I know he has good displays of his power but finding them to share is almost impossible it seems

  20. Friendlysociopath February 14, 2015 at 6:08 pm -      #20

    I’ve seen the anime so I know he has good displays of his power but finding them to share is almost impossible it seems

    That’s my issue as well, I don’t have the time to look through the entire 26 episodes to find what’s probably less than 5 minutes of feats.
    I’m only dropping by every now and then to see how this match is going- I’m making a KOS-MOS vs Etna animation and it’s taking a lot of work, not more than I expected it to take, but it’s still not a fast job.

  21. Private Khaos February 15, 2015 at 12:05 pm -      #21

    I think this match is pretty much dead sadly because of lack of interest and difficultly of finding Jade feats but good luck on that animation

  22. pimpmage February 15, 2015 at 1:16 pm -      #22

    I think it’s dead because one side has feats that are not even quantifiable. Whereas roy can snap his fingers and blow someone up from the inside. The FMA verse is pretty brutal.

  23. Friendlysociopath February 15, 2015 at 5:09 pm -      #23

    I think it’s dead because one side has feats that are not even quantifiable.

    They’re pretty quantifiable, Jade’s Mystic Cage takes that entire Mech and compresses it into just about nothing if I remember right. And Indignation is a staple Tales spell that has shown to carve through rock.
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqFzmpDIhY4

    The problem is Tales is relatively unknown (despite having as many titles as Final Fantasy) and so finding adequate videos for feats is relatively impossible. Jade’s spells pack a decent punch, but they’re not instant and Tales characters kind of max out at arrow-timing, with some exceptions for the ninja characters.

  24. pimpmage February 15, 2015 at 5:48 pm -      #24

    Is that a game mechanic sort of feat like sabin suplexing a train?

  25. Private Khaos February 15, 2015 at 5:55 pm -      #25

    @pimpmage

    Don’t underestimate Jade Curtiss

    @Friendlysociopath

    Unfortunately you’re gonna have to take my word for it on that his Artes that get shown during the anime are basically the same as they are in the game. With the exception of Turbulence being a giant tornado that produces deadly sharp winds. And Mystic Cage basically immobilized Dist’s mech and completely destroyed it. And another thing that you’ll unfortunately have to take my word for due to lack of videos from the anime is that almost all of Jade’s combat abilities and powers aren’t really gameplay mechanics at all

  26. Friendlysociopath February 15, 2015 at 6:27 pm -      #26

    www.animeflavor.com/node/12845
    Jade starts casting spells at 7 minutes in, then again at 9:20, and we see Indignation again at 10:48.

    Well here’s the finale at least. I know his artes from the anime are the same in the game, but we need to see the effects. All I got out of that was they’d hurt, Vaan was buffed by Lorelai so he was borderline immune to attacks- but the spells weren’t doing a thing to the area.

    And another thing that you’ll unfortunately have to take my word for due to lack of videos from the anime is that almost all of Jade’s combat abilities and powers aren’t really gameplay mechanics at all

    Yeah, calling total bullshit on that one in regards to AD skills. Are you including the stupid stuff like Glory making you immune to being staggered and Nullify having a chance to just negate damage? Those are absolutely game mechanics.

  27. Private Khaos February 15, 2015 at 7:34 pm -      #27

    @friendlysociopath

    I said almost all of his abilities. I was gonna say not including AD skills but I forgot what those were called when made that post. So not complete bullshit

  28. Friendlysociopath February 15, 2015 at 7:53 pm -      #28

    Cool, I swear that’s the biggest barrier I have to overcome when Tales characters are concerned, separating game mechanics from canon.
    I kid thee not, I am so happy you understand right now, words cannot express how much rage I’ve had directed at me over 3 years of RPG Battle Royals on my Facebook page.

    This match makes me want to play Tales of the Abyss. I played Symphonia, part of Dawn of the New World, and Xillia 1 and 2. Also makes me want some matches with some of the main characters from them here. Maybe Ludger vs Lloyd swords only.

    Ah well.

  31. Friendlysociopath February 17, 2015 at 8:24 pm -      #31

    According to the Tales fans I have on my Facebook page, Abyss is one of the best Tales games. I happen to agree with them.

    Luke’s journey as a character is amazing, he truly develops so much throughout the game it’s astounding.
    And Jade Curtiss is somewhat revered for having the best wit out of all Tales characters, which is no idle praise.
    And the way they take music and blend it into the plot is no small feat either, the soundtrack is phenomenal- just check out the intro.

    Out of curiosity, how would Sparky Sparky Boom Man vs Roy go?

    Wouldn’t P’li make more sense? Combustion man seemed kind of limited.

    @Lowk I like the idea of a match being ___ vs Sparky Sparky Boom Man, and I figured Roy might actually be a legitimate fight and not just a stupid one.
