Dear Destiny, You were Supposed to be Better than Halo

Dear Destiny, You were Supposed to be Better than Halo

A rant from the War Wizard…
Bungie, you had created one of the best gaming franchises in Halo. It’s what gave the Xbox a chance against PlayStation. You defined the first person shooter genre playing style. With Halo 2, you introduced the online multi-player component that again, helped Xbox Live compete (and beat) the Playstation network. Along comes Halo 3 and you took it another step – moving Halo into the world of MLG competition. Then you got the idea about becoming an independent studio again, and not stuck to just one platform. Your obligations to Microsoft forced you to make the Halo ODST and of course, Halo Reach.

Because you were so successful with the Halo IP, you were able to buy yourself out of the Microsoft exclusive contract and return to being an independent studio, free to create for all platforms.

You partnered up with Activision so that you could leverage the power of a major distributor. All of these actions were very smart and savvy on your end.

Free to create a new IP with no limitations on platform or what story to tell, you chose to build another sci-fi shooter/MMO style game with Destiny.

I’ll admit a few things. I love the way the guns work in the game. Practically flawless. Most of the powers each character class have are very cool. Graphics are amazing, but in today’s gaming environment, you don’t get extra points for that since it’s a fairly easy thing to accomplish. Music and the audio are tip-top. So let’s compare a few things:

LIKES
The Star Wars Speeder Bike Sparrow is nice, but true to Bungie tradition, you give me a vehicle with no weapons on it (like the Mongoose in Halo. At least 343 got that right and updated it with guns). Maybe give it some sort of firing power so that my only option is not just using it as an accidental battering ram.

Again the gun aiming and firing are perfect. Each weapon feels “right” based on the looks and audio you made for each one.

On the rare occasions that I am super charged on a multi-player match, AND I can unleash it in a group of enemies, I admit, feels awesome.

Destiny Character Classes

DISLIKES
Story – I played the Warlock class and when I “beat the game” (Did I?) all I got was a pre rendered scene where the weird Exo chick gave me her gun, and some people cheering towards the Traveler.

No explanation AT ALL about what/who/where the Traveler is. Not a hint about what it was, or what it will be.

I get that the Guardians are a group of heroes, and that covers up for a lot of loopholes in the game play, but shouldn’t the protagonist feel like they are the reason the world continues to exist and not fall into the hands of evil? I feel like I was worker ant in the colony that went into the wild, found a few things, and then came back to the hive unchanged. No big deal really since my character is a “chosen one”.

It’s about the same as if after Luke came back to his Aunt and Uncle’s house after it was razed and told himself, “Well, stormtroopers are here now, I better be more careful” and that was it. End of story, roll credits.

Grinding – The Patrols. The Raids. The Strikes.
B O R I N G

I know you need reasons to have players come back to the game. There are those who I personally know who absolutely LOVE your game and don’t mind. But I’m fairly certain that happens with every game that get’s a huge public release. I enjoyed Destiny, but after finishing “Story Mode”, I really don’t see any other reason to go back and play it again. It’s also kind of unfair to players who don’t want to play multi-player in order to get all the good “extras” that you randomly earn when playing on multi-player.

I have a money making option for you. Tell me I just need to pay $20 for everything. I’ll give you that every time. I know many others would too. And the Battlefield franchise has made a ton of extra profit from that approach, so we know it’s a proven winner.

I know that the game is going to have expansion packs, but maybe I just don’t want to buy those? What have you done to EARN my money moving forward?

Loot caves – Really? I know some people got bent out of shape about these. Personally, I could care less about it.

Loading screen fakery! When playing the beta of the game it was cool to see my ship orbiting around some planet and then once the players where found, watching it either dive to the surface, or “warp” to the next planet. But after seeing those same animations when I am already on Earth and want to go to the Tower (which is also on Earth), and I need to see that as well? You really need a way to fix that.

Multiplayer – I have played 179 games according to your stats: [pontifixx] (Clicking on that link will open a new window.)

Only one time did I get a Mercury map. ONE TIME! What is up with that?

I am currently level 25 and while it’s cool that at the time of this post I am over the level 20 soft cap that’s been mentioned, every time I enter the Crucible, it still feels like it did when I was a level 1 player.

How come on Facebook, I kept on seeing you guys talk about the game before it even came out? Like how it won awards, asked us to create our own Guardians? Because I don’t know about you, but it was very difficult to create something to which I had no access to.

Now, to the CONSPIRACY THEORY!

Halo 5 Guardians

The next Halo game (the 5th in the series) is named Halo 5: Guardians. In Destiny, your character is a “Guardian”. In playing all previous Halo games coded by Bungie, if you escaped the boundaries of a map, or died in some mysterious way, the message would say that your character was “Killed by the Guardians”.

Killed by the Guardians

Terminology is just WAY too coincidental here for there not to be related.

Maybe Master Chief is the TRAVELER? An evolved MC absorbs all of the Forerunner technology and knowledge. Because he has evolved, he can transform himself into energy “Motes of Light” – similar to how Cortana exists – and transfers all that knowledge to his home planet of the human race.

Wouldn’t that be one hell of a punch in the balls to Microsoft?

Youbetcha.

WRAPPING IT UP

Is there any way you can get me to come back and get Destiny 2?

Not gonna lie. It’s going to be really hard for me to justify that purchase. If you want me to invest into your story, YOU HAVE TO GIVE ME MORE STORY instead of some powerful being that came, provided some technology and is slowly dying. Part of my attraction to Destiny was thinking that I would learn what the hell the Traveler was. Big NOPE there. I still don’t know any more than the day I started playing. And that sucks since that is the “hook” that made me want to learn about the world of Destiny that you created.

Overall, you guys did a really good job, but the ending just felt empty. Like there was more that was not told that had to be cut out in order to make the launch date (Ghosts of Halo 2 perhaps?)

Of course, given the current Master Chief Collection multi-player fiasco, at least your online matchmaking works. Most of the time.

“Maybe Master Chief is the TRAVELER? An evolved MC absorbs all of the Forerunner technology and knowledge. Because he has evolved, he can transform himself into energy “Motes of Light” – similar to how Cortana exists – and transfers all that knowledge to his home planet of the human race.”

That doesn’t make sense in either franchise

But basically what happened is that “Bungie” left Microsoft, but the majority of important people involved with making Halo stayed with 343i. So they aren’t really the same Bungie that made Halo. Hell, I think they even ditched Marty O’Donnel after he finished up on the Destiny soundtrack.

But my issues with Destiny are much the same. The weapons, mechanics, and abilities work super smoothly, and the graphics are quite good, but that’s about as far as it goes for me. There is nothing particularly exciting to do when just exploring the open environments. Just killing copy-pasted sets of enemies and farming materials. Just about every mission seems more like a side quest than an actual mission. The story is boring and a disjointed skeleton compared to other titles like Halo, Mass Effect, Far Cry, and so on. Everything is sort of fun the first time around, but then it just becomes a grind of doing the same exact missions, strikes, and so on over and over and over just with increased damage and resistance bonuses for the enemies. The Raid was epic, don’t get me wrong, but there’s only one. They made this big fuss about “Oh, once you get to a high level the game REALLY begins when you do all this super epic raids!” Except they shipped only a single raid with the game purchase. That requires you to have basically 6 people with communication, which unless you have 5 other friends who all play at the same time, finding 5 randoms becomes the true challenge to completing a raid, because it lacks any matchmaking for them and can take nearly as long to do that as it does to play the raid in the first place.

Then, after they sold you what is in my mind, an unfinished game (Skeletal story, only one raid, pretty mediocre multiplayer, a lack of social features, and so on) for $60, they expect me to hand over another $35 to add in all the additional content that, IMO, will likely not make the game feel complete to me, or barely complete at best (You get two expansions, which otherwise would be $20 a piece)? I’m sorry Bungie, but fuck off. Your direct competition, 343i, released the Master Chief Collection that gives me all 4 main Halo games, with all of their original multiplayers (With every map ever, and Halo 2 Anniversary multiplyer on top of it all with its own vastly improved forge), updated graphical resolution and frame rate, fully re-mastered Halo 2 (With 2 new cutscenes and 40 minutes of visual and audio story content in terminals), cross playlist features, Halo:Nightfall access, Halo 5 Beta access, and some other neat cross-playlist options. All for $60. Granted the multiplayer was essentially broken for about 2 weeks, but it is much improved now, and those sorts of problems exist when you try to pack so much content into one package (and try to run 5 different multiplayer engines in the same matchmaking system). Hell, I bought Far Cry 4 for $60 and it blew my expectations out of the water with a game packed with content and diverse replayability options. Exceeded my expectations by so much that I’m actually willing to pay them $30 for the season pass that gets me 6 new expansions upon an already solid and completely full game, 2 of which offer entirely new ways to play the game.

    TL,DR:
Bungie isn’t even really “Bungie” as it was. They shipped me an IMO incomplete game that has greatly dissuaded me from their DLC and future releases, while 343i and Ubisoft shipped 2 games packed with content for the same price and have earned my future purchasing of their future content.

Solid gameplay. That’s about all I can say about this game. The MP was okay, but I don’t play MP all that much, but I admit, I played it a bunch, it was fairly enjoyable. Also, the music was top notch, so naturally, they fired the guy.
    _
The story was cut, mashed, thrown away, who knows. But you know what I heard that makes sense? When you char is revived? That is the original Exo intro. I mean think about it, you’ve been dead for centuries! (get used to that, you hear that line a lot. Hasn’t happened in centuries, never been seen in centuries, centuries this, centuries that… we get it, a long time has passed.)
    _
A human and Awakened would have been bones and dust after centuries, no way a little ghost could magic you back like that.
    _
When you went to go meet the Awakened too (I play an Awakened) I was like, this will be cool. But nope, they don’t even recognize me as one of their own, like I’m nothing to them.
    _
After playing the Alpha and Beta I had such high hopes for this game. But then, I’m not a huge fan of Halo, sure they’re a fun series, but no masterpiece as some claim, so I’m not *as* upset as some people by Bungie’s failure to deliver, but I am upset.
    _
I got my game, after some cool discounts and a mix up on the stores end, for £28 AND a PS4 headset. I use the Headset more than I played the game lol. But, I ground out exotic and purples and upgraded them, logging on for an hour or two each day to get my stuff. But that’s it nothing to keep me coming back. I’m done with it.
    _
And the DLC? Are you fucking kidding me? £35 for 2 sets, £20 a piece? £20 for 3 fucking story missions and very little else… fuck off Bungie. Or Activision, whichever idiot decided all this.
    _
A 10 year franchise? Good luck getting past 1.

To me it was way over hyped. It felt recycled and it REEKED of old Halo concepts. I found myself recalling everything in Halo during gameplay of Destiny. “That’s and elite…that a ghost…that’s a plasma rifle” It was Borderlands in Halo that played liked COD.

So, basically, what everyone’s saying is stay away from Destiny? Is Titanfall at least ok to get into?

  7. Warlock Lowk December 6, 2014 at 1:33 am -      #7

“No explanation AT ALL about what/who/where the Traveler is. Not a hint about what it was, or what it will be.”

Because they’re doing a shit job of trying to elongate the story and make it “mysterious”. Its sort of how I felt after Halo 1. Really hoping they do pull off the expansive huge story like Halo and it’s EU did. I made the mistake of falling into the preorder dlc trap so I’m already all in.
    ===
“A human and Awakened would have been bones and dust after centuries, no way a little ghost could magic you back like that.”

I saw that theory before. However this^ bit well, eh. Respawning involves you getting reassembled from a pool of particles that use to be the old you. So you are actually coming back from being less then bones.
Edit:there also the fact that people were iirc enhanced during the golden age so that may have contributed to there bodies lasting longer.

  8. the_man_with The_Answers December 6, 2014 at 1:41 am -      #8

” Is Titanfall at least ok to get into?”

I’ve heard it’s pretty fun, but has less story than Destiny and is basically 100% online multiplayer. Multiplayer that apparently got stale real quick once people looked past the mechs and wall-running to realize how little diversity the game offered.

On Xbox One it was like $10 over the “Black Friday Weekend.” That would have been the time to get it. But if you can get it at a low price, I’d say go for it as the gameplay is pretty fun (I’ve played it, but I don’t own it).

  9. TheSorrow December 6, 2014 at 1:45 am -      #9

After a few months of playing Destiny, I have no hopes for the Expansions to grab my interest again. I have no desire to waste my money on something that will inevitably be patched into a oblivion like everything else.

The most insulting thing about the game by far is it’s attempt at a story. The Exo Girl’s (don’t even know her name for fuck’s sake) line “I don’t even have time to explain why I don’t have time to explain” is so meta, it’s not even funny. I swear one of the disgruntled developer’s just slipped that line of dialogue in.

  10. Neon Lord December 6, 2014 at 1:57 am -      #10

“Is Titanfall at least ok to get into?”

If you like story, then don’t get it. The story may as well not exist.

Be aware that when you start, you will suck. Hard. And don’t use the smart pistol because no one will like you.

However, it does have extremely fast-paced and addicting gameplay, which is what you would get it for if you like it and don’t believe you would get bored with it. Because of this I HIGHLY recommend you try the Orgin Game Time of Titanfall before you decide to buy it (unless you are really sure you will like it).

The great thing about Titanfall is that it’s still being continually supported by the developers with free updates. For example, just a month ago a major update added a co-op mode to the game – for free!

  11. CH1C4N0444 is allergic to bullets December 6, 2014 at 2:26 am -      #11

@TMWTA So, gets boring pretty quickly? Or is it just fun, but looses it’s luster and stays fun?

Don’t know why, but Titanfall vs Destiny sounds like a good match to me right now.

  12. the_man_with The_Answers December 6, 2014 at 2:34 am -      #12

It stays fun but loses its luster. Because underneath the mech and wall running shine it pretty much boils down to the same relatively generic weapons and the same limited gametypes.

The respawn being cannon is fair enough, but that’s after a ghost finds you, a little light of the Traveller, linking you to it and it’s magical “can do anything, apparently” stuff. Up to that moment you’ve been rotting for centuries. Sure mankind had a bunch of unknown, unspecified enhancements, but it still seems really stupid.

Also, you’re found in a car, in Russia, in full, useful Guardian gear, how’d you die exactly? Eh, if only bungie knew what the word ‘Story’ meant, we might have some idea, any idea really, about Destiny and it’s world, but we don’t, all we have is “I don’t have time to tell you why I don’t have time to tell you” from dues ex machina robo chick and “I could tell you about the darkness, I could tell you about the battles and how the Earth fell…” from the Speaker dude, who doesn’t in fact tell you anything at all…

“Also, you’re found in a car, in Russia, in full, useful Guardian gear, how’d you die exactly?”

The gear is created by the ghost when it brings you back.
Your Ghost built this wire armor from available mass. It handles life support, but little else.

As for how you die I think they went with a open ambiguous beginning. Sort of like how elder scrolls doesn’t tell you what kind of person you were before, you kind of fill that in yourself.

Yeah the stranger example is a bit a bullshit. They could’ve at least given her a name or something at the least.
The Speaker though I kind of understand. In universe, he guys busy, he had probably told the “stories” time and time again, and he did mention that they were basically just that. Stories to scare children. Long winded exposition can be just as bad the lack of info given. I see the Speaker as becoming the occasional lore dropper throughout a series.
Stranger should’ve been the one to actually give us something more. She was the one to get us to go all the way from the moon to fucking Venus, through murderous robot, just to reach her.

Well that’s one mystery solved. To the other bit, in honesty it’s just a badly written game. I’ve heard reports the story was much bigger and inclusive and then they scrapped it all, for… whatever reasons. That’s where the Exo beginning comes from, each race had a different start thing, and why it makes more sense if you were an Exo. But whatever, Bungie dropped the ball big time. Way to run attempt to coast on past success and drill your new IP into the crust from the start.

  18. Warlock Lowk December 6, 2014 at 9:30 am -      #18

“To the other bit, in honesty it’s just a badly written game.”

Eh, I’m holding off the badly written view. I like the lore and stories they give in the grimiore. I think the game was just sectioned off poorly. Very poorly.. for now at least. Its Like they cut off a pieces out of chapter one and saving it for a later chapter. I’ll reserve judgement for the dlc.
That and they need to work on putting more moments in the Grimoire into cutscenes or something.

  19. Kara Zor-El December 6, 2014 at 10:03 am -      #19

The grimoire should be in the damn game! Not some stupid website thing…

The DLC has 3 story missions. 3. Good luck getting a ton more story content.

  20. Darth Expert December 6, 2014 at 10:11 am -      #20

Bungie hyped Destiny in such a way that people imagine what was in the game thus making them foolishly think what they wanted would be in the game. The game just doesn’t have enough depth the actual gameplay choices are limited. Just follow this road to go there or here there are no backroad shortcuts or secret areas to explore.

  21. Hitman H94 December 7, 2014 at 8:53 am -      #21

If I am remember ing right the originally story line before it was cut was something along the lines of the Queen’s brother, I think he was called Crow in the video, confronts with your character basically telling you that the traveller being good is all a lie, etc, then you join another group of guardians who work with Crow against the traveller.

The Speaker sells a hunter cloak that mentions a group of guardians that go against the traveller.

  22. Warlock Lowk December 7, 2014 at 12:00 pm -      #22

I think the current is something along the line of the traveller might not being as good as people think. Instead its just using people to protect itself. And us Guardians, just war machine filled with light.

  23. Hitman H94 December 7, 2014 at 12:47 pm -      #23

    What makes you say that?

  24. Warlock Lowk December 7, 2014 at 2:17 pm -      #24

    “What makes you say that?”

Remembered it slightly wrong. Not good, but not evil. Going by the Grimoire entries it sounds more like the Traveler is just doing it’s function.
    Dreams of Alpha Lupi
You have lived as invisibly as possible, flicking from solar system to solar system, making grand plans, overseeing the culturing of civilizations, before leaving in a blink. But you have no recollection of ever wanting worship or even thanks from those blessed by you.
    But memory is heavy now.
It feels like lead and neutronium and electroweak matter fashioned into a moon-sized ball that you must carry as you move.
Now, your flight is rapid, your vast mind infected with such dread and toxic doubt that you find yourself afraid of the simple act of thought.
And it is your children you must turn to now, in time of need.

    -Ghost fragment: Traveler
The Guardians seem more like a response to a threat, rather then it just “using” people to fight it’s battles. I guess an argument could be made it still counts but after what it has done, I could probably see it more like it calling in a favor.
    ===
As for the war machines thing.
At the end of the path grew a flower in the shape of a Ghost. I reached out to pluck it and it cut me with a thorn. I bled and the blood was Light.
The Ghost said to me: You are a dead thing made by a dead power in the shape of the dead. All you will ever do is kill. You do not belong here. This is a place of life.
The Traveler is life, I said. You are a creature of Darkness. You seek to deceive me.
But I looked behind me, down the long slope where the blossoms tumbled in the warm wind and the great trees wept sap like blood or wine, and I felt doubt.
When my Ghost raised me from the sea there was a thorn-cut in my left hand and it has not healed since.

    -Legend: The Black Garden
Basically what I got was, Guardians=Zombie, light infused, killing machines. Sure they can do other stuff but if you think about it what exactly does a Guardian’s main duty seem to involve. From what I can tell it seems to involve bullets and putting those bullets into things at high speed.

  25. Hitman H94 December 8, 2014 at 9:12 am -      #25

Man when I hear some of the stuff from the grimoire cards, I really wish they had put them in game.

  26. the_man_with The_Answers December 9, 2014 at 1:04 pm -      #26

    Hah ha fuck you Bungie.

Now that the DLC dropped, people for at least this week can’t play the weekly or nightfall strike if you didn’t shell out $20 for the DLC, they can’t play the new level 26 strike playlist if you didn’t shell out $20, and they removed the engram drop from beating a 24 strike and made that exclusive 26 playlist.

Yeah, don’t expect me to buy anything else from Bungie unless they do a complete 180. This is probably the most upfront and shameless attempt at grabbing money that I’ve seen in some time, and the worst part is that Bungie is still acting like they haven’t fucked up hardcore.

  27. admin December 9, 2014 at 2:32 pm -      #27

@the_man_with The_Answers and everyone else. The part that sucks the most is that I was really hoping that Bungie could be big enough to “buck the system” and give us something spectacular to invest our time in.

  28. TheSorrow December 9, 2014 at 1:13 pm -      #28

Figures they would fuck up the Expansion as well. Bungie can’t do anything right these days.

  29. Hitman H94 December 9, 2014 at 2:32 pm -      #29

Yeah , it is pretty fucked up, they said that the new strike will be in the rotations now, whether they make a vanilla rotation for when the DLC strike will pop up in the future is something everyone is wondering but I highly doubt it.

They also made grinding harder now that they have moved the engrams to 26, I can’t wait to hear what they will say.

  30. Hitman H94 December 9, 2014 at 2:34 pm -      #30

@admin Something clearly happened during production which is totally clear, everyone wants to know what. I think there was something but I have a feeling activision may have put there hands in this.

  31. admin December 9, 2014 at 2:40 pm -      #31

@Hitman H94 – I’m sure Activision had to make sure that there would be enough money down the road with additional DLC’s and the like, but to gut the story for that is a bit of a dumb move on their end. They would have my money if the story was better and there was something to look forward to. Destiny 2? Please, I don’t think there is anything they can do to get me to come back. And the thing is, I would LOVE to, but I just don’t trust them anymore. Looks like for now Blizzard is the last remaining big studio that won’t sacrifice story for money. Of course we all know they can afford to do that right now. Maybe other publishers should take notice?

  32. pimpmage December 9, 2014 at 2:43 pm -      #32

Creators of video game series Witcher also good so far. They even give DLC for free. Even DLC for Witcher 3 are going to be free and the only thing you need to get them is just to buy a game, special edition or no.
I only wish they give us more interesting gameplay in W3 and stick more to original Withcher style. So far gameplay looks good to me, but sad thing Geralt looks way too overpowered as character.

Meanwhile on Lowk’s account, he’s finding out that wizards are female. Or at least can be female.
They’ve got Eris narrating some bit from the grimoire story so theres that. Moon cracked becuase of Crota swinging a sword. Still waiting on an cutscene other then the teaser thing.

“You’re correct, they and Rockstar are all good studios that seem to do things right.”

Cept for that whole thing about heist.

I’m shocked nobody has mentioned how generic the art direction has been on this game.

Seriously… it looks like Bungie went to twenty different studios and said “design us some scifi soldiers”. Every single aesthetic aspect of destiny just looks… cheap.
