What If…Harry Dresden Was in the Fairy Tail Universe?

What If...Harry Dresden Was in the Fairy Tail Universe?

Suggested by Private Khaos

He wakes up to find himself in a decent sized cabin with all his stuff, including Bob, to only discover he’s somehow has been transferred to Earthland.

He doesn’t know anything about this new world. He arrived shortly after the time Natsu and the others return to Fairy Tail after the 7 year time skip.

Does Dresden take part in any major events?
Where would he rank in power as a wizard?
Does he join any guilds?
How would he survive?
What would happen if he met the members of Fairy Tail?
What other events might occur?

    First

    “Does Dresden take part in any major events?”
    He may take place in the tournament.

    “Where would he rank in power as a wizard?”
    Seeing how his flames can be hotter than the sun I say really high.

    “Does he join any guilds?”
    Maybe but most likely to learn about the place.

    “How would he survive?”
    His magic is better than most in Fairy Tail probably by getting a job doing requests for money.

    “What would happen if he met the members of Fairy Tail?”
    Plot activates and he either becomes friends or enemies with Natsu.

    “What other events might occur?”
    Dresden is now the strongest and famous wizard in FT ( unless they got a boost )

    Yay, this finally got posted! I thought this was a fun what if scenario. I personally think Dresden may be mid-tier in the Fairy Tail universe but he’s gone up against some pretty power foes so I could be wrong

    Anything special about Dresden’s durability?

  4. Jake_Uzumaki December 4, 2014 at 8:08 am -      #4

    slightly above average human durability.

  5. Belisaurius December 4, 2014 at 8:44 am -      #5

    One of the things Harry has going for him is that he has a HUGE variety of magics to work with. In most of fairy tail, mages tend to have one kind of magic. You have Natsu with his fire dragon style, You’ve got Grey with his ice, and Erza has an armory on call.

    Dresden, on the other hand, can create shields of force, launch torrents of fire, freeze someone solid in an instant, create magical potions, track someone for miles, enchant items, and create windstorms on command.

    Does Dresden take part in any major events?

    That woild depend on what guild he joined, and he join a guild.

    Where would he rank in power as a wizard?

    Either the class under S or a low S class imo.

    Does he join any guilds?

    I would imagine yes, it seems to be a good way to make money.

    How would he survive?

    Assuming he can use his magic in Fairy Tail since the systems aren’t the same- he’d survive by working at a guild and making money. Although I’d have to think he’d spend significant time and effort trying to figure out how to go home.

    What would happen if he met the members of Fairy Tail?

    Variety of factors here, probably a “hello” before moving on. If he were ti fight them for some reason, I think they’re (The main characters) all capable of taking him down. Slight twinge of doubt for Lucy.

    What other events might occur?

    Separate from the canon main story? Dresden would likely invest his efforts into creating a way to go home- this massive venture would possibly attract the greatest minds in Fairy Tail since he can prove his magic doesn’t work like their own.

    You have Natsu with his fire dragon style, You’ve got Grey with his ice, and Erza has an armory on call.

    Natsu has more than one kind of magic. You’re also neglecting how inventive everyone in that universe is with their magic, just fire magic let’s Natsu do a hell of a lot.

    Now that I think about it I can see Dresden totally joining in on the usual overdoing it of Fairy Tail and destroy a bunch of buildings and such

  8. Shgon Dunstan December 4, 2014 at 9:34 am -      #8

    He’d have a lot of Hax, but… Kind of lacking in physical abilities.

    And though most FT-Mages lack versatility in their magic, there are exceptions.

    Bigger problem though… Is that the timeline he shows up in isn’t all that many arcs ago… He doesn’t really have all that much time in which to get swept up in events, and most of said events are over with to quickly for him to have time to hear about them and decide to help out.

  9. Private Khaos December 4, 2014 at 10:07 am -      #9

    I chose after the 7 year time skip because I imagined Dresden not doing anything big or interesting if the main cast of Fairy Tail aren’t around

  10. Shgon Dunstan December 4, 2014 at 10:20 am -      #10

    If he starts out in the same city as the FT guild, I could see him getting into the plot. aside from that though, much of it will likely just pass him by, as he’d be to busy trying to find out where the hell he was.

    And even if it didn’t… The two big “plots” involve an army of magic resistant dragons, and demons trying to release tons of magic eating dust… He’d be really useful, but all the anti-magic would hurt his Hax about as much as everyone else’s.

  11. Private Khaos December 4, 2014 at 10:58 am -      #11

    @shgon

    When did the demon dust thing happen? Was it just in the manga because I only watch the FT anime and I dont remember such a thing

  12. Shgon Dunstan December 4, 2014 at 11:06 am -      #12

    The current arc in the manga.

    And it’s not the demon’s dust(though they have used some themselves), their trying to set off one of the counsel’s doomsday weapons called Face. Which if all(there are thousands) are activated, will destroy all magic on the continent.

  13. Private Khaos December 4, 2014 at 11:31 am -      #13

    @shgon

    Wow. They’re doing an arc in the anime where the 12 Zodiac gates rebel but that sounds cooler. I’m thinking we make this the anime version of FT since I’m not sure if they’re very different or not

  14. Epicazeroth December 4, 2014 at 4:45 pm -      #14

    So, first of all. I haven’t read the Dresden files, but I’ve gotten some idea of who he is from this site and others. I’m familiar with FT, but if I make any major mistakes about Dresden, somebody just correct me.
    ===
    @Belisaurus: Actually, Erza’s armors and weapons make her extremely versatile. She has so many that she can requip into basically whatever she needs right then.

    Mirajane, Makarov, Jellal, and presumably other Wizards of similar caliber, can all manipulate multiple Elements along with their specialties. Jellal’s Magic is fairly versatile as well, and Makarov has a shit-ton of Magics he’s studied and is proficient at.
    ===
    @Shgon: “Kind of lacking in physical abilities.”
    Yeah, that’s a good point. I mean, couldn’t one punch from Erza or Natsu or Laxus just absolutely destroy him? Not factoring in any magical barriers, of course.

    “And though most FT-Mages lack versatility in their magic, there are exceptions.”
    This is also somewhat a matter of semantics. The vast majority of Wizards in the FT-verse are fairly weak and focused. The characters we see are supposed to be like the top 10%. Most of the main characters, supporting characters, and presumably named-but-unshown characters, are fairly versatile – especially if they get creative.

    “He doesn’t really have all that much time in which to get swept up in events, and most of said events are over with to quickly for him to have time to hear about them and decide to help out.”
    Depends. If he joins FT or another Guild (Blue Pegasus or Lamia Scale, mainly) he would get there. Otherwise, it would just be the GMG’s and related events. Though, then again, that is like half of the story. But as an independent Wizard, or if he doesn’t land in Fiore, he won’t be doing anything.
    ===
    To answer the OP:

    “Does Dresden take part in any major events?”
    Probably. I mean, his personality should still be the same, and (correct me if I’m wrong) but isn’t he not the kind of person to just sit back during such events? Unless FT villains suddenly become able to destroy mountain ranges or some bullshit, he should be both willing and able to help.

    “Does he join any guilds?”
    The same Guilds where he would be helping people who can’t defend themselves, by stopping evil magical threats to individuals and the world? Isn’t that basically the same job he has in the books?

    “What would happen if he met the members of Fairy Tail?”
    Probably depends. I mean, Laxus, Natsu, or possibly Gajeel might try to pick a fight which isn’t usually the best way to make friends. Aside from that, they’re all pretty nice people. If he met Makarov, Makarov seems to have an impressive track record of helping young (relatively) Wizards who don’t know what to do – usually by convinving them to join Fairy Tail.
    ===
    Also, Gildarts destroyed a black hole. Granted, it was clearly not a realistic black hole, but it’s still ridiculous.

    I’m getting the Dresden Files soon, but until then, I’ll just ask. What’s Dresden’s offensive output?
    ===
    @Private Khaos: “They’re doing an arc in the anime where the 12 Zodiac gates rebel but that sounds cooler. I’m thinking we make this the anime version of FT since I’m not sure if they’re very different or not”
    That’s a filler arc. They don’t want to catch up, and afterwards they’ll get to the Sun Village Arc.

    Also, just asking: do you know where I can watch FT Dubbed online? Either streaming or download. The site I normally use is stuck way the fuck back in the Key of the Starry Sky Arc.

  15. Jake_Uzumaki December 4, 2014 at 5:51 pm -      #15

    “What’s Dresden’s offensive output?”

    It’s gone up since the series began, originally wall level destruction was very difficult for him but as time has gone on he’s roughly small building levelish now his absolute biggest spell is a multikilometer (or was it yards can’t remember now) gravity manipulation spell

  16. Warlock Lowk December 4, 2014 at 6:58 pm -      #16

    He gets wrecked physically. One of his most notable magical talants is tracking things down so he should do really well at getting jobs if he joins a guild.

  17. Private Khaos December 4, 2014 at 7:27 pm -      #17

    @epicazeroth

    The FT dubbed isn’t caught up with the sub. So the Key of the Starry Night arc is where the dub is at

  18. Numinous One December 4, 2014 at 7:36 pm -      #18

    “Unless FT villains suddenly become able to destroy mountain ranges or some bullshit, he should be both willing and able to help.”

    I doubt they’ll reach that, though not for lack of trying. Apparently Acnologia sees E.N.D as a threat, so we’ll see where that goes in the next few weeks.
    I just want to see the fight between Acnologia and Igneel, even if it is useless for feats since they’re a few kilometers in the sky.

    Back on topic, if Dresden only has human-ish durability, even the fodder would be breaking bones with each hit, so he’d have to play it safe if he does choose to get involved.
    I could see him getting involved with the magic council though, he seems more suited to that work than guild brawls.

    “Also, just asking: do you know where I can watch FT Dubbed online?”

    Kissanime is pretty good.
    FT dubbed is at ep 164 I think.

  19. Epicazeroth December 4, 2014 at 8:01 pm -      #19

    @Jake: “a multikilometer (or was it yards can’t remember now) gravity manipulation spell”
    Uhh… That’s quite a difference.
    ===
    @Lowk: “One of his most notable magical talants is tracking things down so he should do really well at getting jobs if he joins a guild.”
    Many FT jobs also require fighting. Actually, I’m fairly certain it’s almost all of them.
    ===
    @Numinous: “Kissanime is pretty good.”
    Ah. Thanks. I think I used that once, actually; I normally use AnimeHaven (FullFights).

    “if Dresden only has human-ish durability, even the fodder would be breaking bones with each hit”
    I can see a few solutions to that.
    1) He (or somebody else) casts a defensive or durability spell so he can take at least a few hits. Wendy might be able to.
    2) He just stays back and uses mainly ranged. That’s not really viable, though. FT battles tend to level towns.
    ===
    A question, though.
    Where does Dresden’s Magic come from? Can anybody learn Dresden-verse Magic, or is it internal (genetic/inborn/whatever)? FT Magic is available for anybody to learn, so he could learn FT Magic to supplement his own; this would allow him to increase his physical capabilities.

  20. Warlock Lowk December 4, 2014 at 8:06 pm -      #20

    “Where does Dresden’s Magic come from?”

    life, death, emotions, his own soul, a demon, places of power, fae. Harry has had a pretty diverse pool of things to draw from over the years.
    ===
    “Many FT jobs also require fighting. Actually, I’m fairly certain it’s almost all of them.”

    Isn’t that just with people like Erza’s group? I could’ve sworn they had regular just find this thing kind of jobs.

  21. Jake_Uzumaki December 4, 2014 at 8:51 pm -      #21

    Now that I think more considering the small scale covered a parking lot and later a good chunk of a mall the big one like was a couple of kilometers

  22. Super Combine December 4, 2014 at 10:35 pm -      #22

    @Lowk

    In the anime, Erza’s group was hired to do a play once and I’m pretty sure there’s other low level jobs like getting cats out of trees and whatnot that were mentioned earlier in the series.

  23. Private Khaos December 4, 2014 at 10:51 pm -      #23

    Even though I recently finished Cold Days I can’t remember if Dresden still has his enchanted duster or not because that’ll be a great defensive attribute especially if he can get someone to make an even stronger enchantment

  24. Jake_Uzumaki December 4, 2014 at 11:08 pm -      #24

    I don’t think he’s gotten it back yet.

    Also Dresden’s going to a parallel universe in the next universe to fight an evil version of himself hence the book being named Mirror Mirror, Jim was so excited about that aspect of the book he went ahead and let that detail out.

  25. Warlock Lowk December 4, 2014 at 11:08 pm -      #25

    “Even though I recently finished Cold Days I can’t remember if Dresden still has his enchanted duster or not because that’ll be a great defensive attribute especially if he can get someone to make an even stronger enchantment”

    He might have gotten his new Coat enchanted by Skin Game. It’s been a while since I read it though.

  26. Jake_Uzumaki December 4, 2014 at 11:15 pm -      #26

    next book*

    Also yeah he did get a new Duster I believe.

  27. Warlock Lowk December 5, 2014 at 12:42 am -      #27

    “Jim was so excited about that aspect of the book he went ahead and let that detail out.”

    Jim is a bit of a nerd so yeah I’d expect that he would be. Though didn’t expect that he’d ever go back to the idea of an AU outside that marvel nod.

  28. Jake_Uzumaki December 5, 2014 at 7:41 am -      #28

    Well it’s not too surprising, Dresden’s been to the edge of the universe now.

    Also have you read Warcry 5 yet?

  29. Warlock Lowk December 5, 2014 at 3:57 pm -      #29

    “Also have you read Warcry 5 yet?”

    You mean the Dresden vs the eldritch tsunami issue? Yeah.

  30. Epicazeroth December 5, 2014 at 11:41 pm -      #30

    @Lowk: “life, death, emotions, his own soul, a demon, places of power, fae”
    My bad, I should have been more general (how often do you hear that?). I meant is there something special that lets him use Magic, or is it something anybody can do with training and connections?

    “I could’ve sworn they had regular just find this thing kind of jobs.”
    Well, there are “find my lost shit” Jobs. But people only lose stuff in fiction because something or somebody stole it. I remember Elfman did a “Dig for Rocks” Job once, but aside from that I can’t recall any non-fighting ones. Mira occasionally gives Lucy non-fighting Jobs as a favor, so they exist. But I don’t think anything solely tracking-related has ever been even hinted at.
    ===
    @Jake: “Also Dresden’s going to a parallel universe in the next universe”
    What? A parallel universe in the next universe?

  31. Warlock Lowk December 6, 2014 at 1:16 am -      #31

    “I meant is there something special that lets him use Magic, or is it something anybody can do with training and connections?”

    Not sure really. I think you have to have a talent at it to manually interact with magic. I mean regular people can do magic but that might be with the help of something like talismans and such. Then again Micheal was a normal mortal iirc and he was able to mystical stuff using the power of faith.

  32. Jake_Uzumaki December 6, 2014 at 1:50 am -      #32

    I meant next book

  33. Epicazeroth December 6, 2014 at 2:40 am -      #33

    @Lowk: “I think you have to have a talent at it to manually interact with magic.”
    Hmm… Well, now I actually forget why I needed to know this in the first place. I think it had something to do with Dresden being a bit.. fragile, compared to FT characters. I suppose it doesn’t matter. He could just learn FT Magic to increase his physical abilities; it should be easier than learning from scratch cause he already has one type of Magic.

    Though, if some of his magic comes from other beings, would he still have those? If he can’t access the Nevernever from FT, wouldn’t he be unable to use any abilities that require action on the part of a Dresden Files character?
