This post is officially the 10,000 post for this site. Now this number is a bit deceptive. It includes any posts from the past that might have been deleted, or others that were being tested and then later removed.
We are slightly over 4,000 posts, and when we hit 5k posts, that will be a testament to this site.
But I wanted to take a bit of time to thank everyone who’s ever been a part of this site in any capacity. From the trolls to the lurkers, the one time posters to the likes of Commander Cross, who as of this writing, has an astounding 22,926 comments!
Special hat tip to Mike, of which if it weren’t for his generous contributions of money to keep this site online, we would not be here today reaching this milestone.
We’ve lost many along the way, and have gained some excellent members who continue to contribute today.
To think, I originally acquired this domain name in exchange for an ebook that I wrote.
My first attempt on this site was a personal blog, that covered music sports and technology. While those elements exist on the site today, back then, they were the focus, and there was no concept of a “versus” scenario.
I knew I didn’t want a site that mirrored others already online. At the time, I was big into Halo 2 and already knew that Halo 3 was coming out later (2007). Before getting into Halo 2, I was a strict PC gamer. Stuff like Baldur’s Gate & Lord of the Realms 2 were all I played. Then by chance, the place where I worked at the time decided to bring in an intern from a local design school.
This guy sat next to me and even though our jobs were no way related, we had a lot of conversations about gaming. He was a big PS2 player at the time, but told me about an amazing game on the Xbox called Halo. I had heard of the game, but never thought twice about it. Eventually, he did convince me to pick up an Xbox and I was more interested in a modded version at the time.
Who was this guy?
You guessed it – Expert.
Once Halo 2 came out, he and I would go on and do the multiplayer matches from time to time and he confessed to leaving Playstation to move over to favoring the Xbox instead.
So one day as I was talking about an idea for BankGambling, he jokingly said that I should make a site only about Halo and Master Chief. I knew that it was popular, but I really didn’t want a site dedicated only to Halo, since I am a fan of so many franchises. But the idea stuck in my head.
Fast forward to December, the day before Christmas eve. I had always been a fan of Star Wars (as just about anyone else who comes to this site) and the idea hit me. How about my favorite Star Wars character Boba Fett, going up against my favorite VG character (at the time) in Master Chief? Surely, someone else must have already done this. I googled the battle sequence both ways and nothing was there. So, post number 60 in BankGambling’s history was Master Chief Vs Boba Fett.
I knew the timing of the post would be good because most sites wind down on new content during the holiday break. But the trick to success for this particular post was because of one site. It used to be the place to get something new online, and yes, it predated reddit and facebook. It was a site named Digg.com.
Back then it was called “the digg effect” where your site would get so much traffic that it would crash the servers. I got to experience that because of this post, and it told me instantly that I was on to something.
Through the years, the look of BankGambling has changed 5 times. If you really want to see it, visit archive.org and look at some various dates. Also had to switch up hosting. On that note, I have to thank my friend Leo, who let me host BankGambling on his servers for free during the first few years. It was a good situation for awhile until the site started getting a ton more traffic. His servers just couldn’t handle it. But again, I thank him for hooking me up with the free web juice.
FINDING THE WAY
When you look at earlier posts on this site, you can see how a proper format wasn’t in place for quite some time. It’s not for lack of trying. I’m not creative and have to lean on others to help me out on that process. But I eventually got to where it is today and it seems to be working just fine.
One last part about the history before moving on. For quite some time, this site had a Master Chief fight every Friday (something like two years straight I think). Yet, somehow we’ve earned a reputation as a site that hates Halo. I know I’ve even posted some negative articles on the various stages of Halo throughout the years, but it was done because I only wanted the game to be better.
BankGambling has always been about experimentation. That’s why I am always willing to try just about any kind of match and use different mediums to promote the site. I think we all remember the DISQUS experiment and how much everyone loved it. And today, there are those who can’t stand Akmed or the YouTube channel for this site.
But, because of the open minded approach, it was directly responsible for the creation and launch of BankGamblingTopia. And the fact that it’s on it’s own set of servers and runs independently of this site, clearly shows how powerful that idea was and still is today. Of course, it would be a spam infested shit mound if not for the mods who police it everyday just because they care about the community. You need to thank those people too.
SO WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?
I always have ideas, but ultimately it will be how you want to make it work. With everyone needing to live so many lives on different networks, I think we are very soon close to a time where the human race as a whole will just know where to find the things they want – without Google. By being present on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, we are broadcasting to others like us who are searching for something satisfying for their soul. The latest post from IGN has nothing on the level of conversation we have here.
For that, I am forever grateful.
I hope that someday I can repay all of you on some way that makes an impact in your life.
